Four years after its final season aired on HBO, I still have fresh memories of Saturday nights spent on the comfortable sofa with eyes and ears dedicated to the boob tube. Nothing was more gratifying than watching my fab four droned on and on about men, shoes, cocktails, nightclubs, VIPs and yes, more men. I was obsessed with SATC because it brought everything that any self-respecting woman would want in a show that supposedly represents her breed.

Friendship being one of the main subjects, with sex and the city the driving force behind it, was realistic in the sense that boy toys didn't actually hop from one friend to the other. It was not a competition on who gets who and who gets what. No jealousy, betrayal, and all those sorts that seem to associate with women when put together in the same room. It didn't downgrade the integrity of women by highlighting our weaknesses but it was peppered with a streak of independence to show the world that women aren't just sex objects to be lusted after but creatures with intelligence. Yes, we can dominate if we want to. Men, kneel and bow..;o)

Throw in the chronic girly stuff and you get one fabulous and utterly stimulating show. It was empowering women while filling in their fantasies of the good life which should comprise of wit, beauty, and yes, good sex. It's brassy attitude New York style.

The show was loosely based on Candace Bushnell's book of the same name. Candace Bushnell is a columnist and the book is a compilation of her work. It was created by Darren Star, the same person responsible for Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210. Thankfully, SATC had none of those catfights and back stabbing so predictable in shows in this category. This is a modern take on a sexy theme.

The sex-ers of the series:
Carrie Bradshaw- (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) is a sex-columnist for the fictional New York Star. Each episode is narrated by her and follows her exploits. Always, we see her typing on her laptop with each episode starting and ending there. She's a party girl, nightclub staple and uber fashionista. Men and fashion equal in status in her list of weaknesses. In one episode she made her boyfriend swear on Chanel when she told him not to tell anyone about what she had just revealed to him. She has an extensive collection of designers' shoes, mainly Manolo Blahnik.

She is my favourite character among the four not because she is the main star but because she is easy to relate to. She is an assertive woman who, like any ordinary woman, struggles with the usual problems from rent to inner strength. Despite her modest earnings she stretches her budget just so she can grab her latest fashion finds. Now, what kind of a girl doesn't do that from time to time? Despite her numerous sexcapades, she is a romantic at heart and one that believes in love in the most clichéd meaning of the word.

Charlotte York- (played by Kristin Davis) works in an art gallery. She is the most conservative and prudent among the group. If Carrie is a romantic, imagine what this woman's mindset is when it comes to the big L. Hailing from a wealthy family in Connecticut; Charlotte is a classy lady who is level-headed but very emotional. She shies away from dirty talk and is always the first one to be embarrassed about sex being discussed openly. But even sensible Charlotte occasionally gives in to booty calls and has her share of adventures with the opposite sex..

Miranda Hobbes- (played by Cynthia Nixon) is a career-oriented woman. As a lawyer she maintains a no-nonsense outlook in life. We often see her as Carrie's confidante due to her practical approach in life. Her negativity often renders humour to the show as she counteracts her friends' daring exploits in a matter-of-fact tone. She's very practical, a trait which I'm sure a lot of professional women can relate to.

Samantha Jones- (played by Kim Catrall) the try-sexual of the group. Meaning, she's willing to try anything sexual. Can you beat that? She is often seen in a promiscuous position and I curled at her unabashed boldness. She is the oldest of the group but is known to devour younger men in her lust-time. She certainly knows what she wants and how to get it. To her, everything is possible especially when it comes to relationship. Because of this, she experiences a number of embarrassing adventures throughout the series.

Sex and the City was a phenomenal success because it acknowledged issues that a lot of women battle with everyday but are considered better discussed behind closed doors. Some of these issues can give my mother a heart attack. It is a little disconcerting to watch with one's parents except when your folks are extremely cool about it. I cannot stress enough how much of a feast this is to our eyes since it has got gorgeous with capital G written all over it. From the cast, guests, set, fashion and some pretty memorable lines that sound so absurd but deliciously modern. This is very materialistic in the surface but reality rings in every episode. We do lust after the things that these four women achingly covet at some point in our lives. There's something for everybody to relate to. The kiss-and-telling we share with our girlfriends at our favourite hang-out, who didn't have that experience? Thank goodness, these girls eat, too. The relationship explored in this show not only entails to humans but the feeling of closeness and domesticity we attribute to our beloved homeland (in this case, the city of New York). We all know how it is. You can take the girl out of the city but you cannot take the city out of the girl. Love it! Love it! Love it!

Summary: Girl power to the fullest.
