Advantages: great for women light entertainment
Disadvantages: not so good for men
Sex and the city is an American sitcom based around four single women living in New York (Manhattan) It aired first in America in 1998 and had 6 very successful seasons. Over here in the UK it was originally aired on channel four, but you can now still see re runs on the sky channel paramount and also fiver. The show ended in 2004 with the end finally. My wife is an avid fan of sex and the city and watched all seasons and now still the re runs, she actually cried at the last episode (what's all that about?) Now I have been subjected to many shows, which quite honestly I shouldn't admit to, but I have to be fair to her as I watch all the footy on the television. Here are my thoughts on the programme, both good and bad!
Now the characters are:
Carrie Bradshaw played by Sarah Jessica Parker
Samantha Jones played by Kim Cattrall
Charlotte York played by Kristen Davis
Miranda Hobbes played by Cynthia Nixon
Each character has their own identity and difference in personalities but the same thing they all have in common is men!
Samantha is a complete man-eater and will try anything once. It always amazes me the amount of sexual partners they all have especially Samantha, is this what its really like in Manhattan?
Samantha is a successful career woman, but it does surprise me at the amount of time she actually does spend at work she seems to spend more time in the bedroom, an easy way to make money wouldn't you say? I would like to add that although her character comes across a bit cold at time, she really does have a very warm heart. At first she seems to be unable to be in love and stay with only one man, due to her obsession with sex. Towards the later part of the show she does hook up with Smith Jerrod who she does fall in love with although it took her a while to admit it. My wife was very pleased when he joined the show as she calls him a good piece of eye candy, which I'm sure most women will see.
Carrie is the main character and narrates through the shows. I do find this quite annoying at times and feel almost that it takes the realism away from it. Ask yourself who would narrate their life and feelings? In a shows point of view I suppose it is getting these points across for the viewers. Carrie writes a column for a newspaper all about men. Relationships and sex, hence the name and contents of the show. Like Samantha she doesn't seem to do much work, the only time you see her work is when she is tapping away on her little laptop in her apartment at night, is she nocturnal? She has an obsession with shoes and clothes, which I have to admit that looking at her dress sense this doesn't show. My wife likes her style but I think sometimes she can look totally awful and quite stupid really, but I suppose she lives in Manhattan so she can wear what she wants.
Charlotte York is a very successful woman too, she works in a fancy art gallery, but again like the above she doesn't work much either. She is the character who is obsessed with marriage and having children which very much differs from the others. She does give the impression that she is rather prudish and prim and proper. I will have to beg to differ here as she does like the rest seem to have rather a lot of dates and sexual partners so I wouldn't really call this prudish or prim and proper. The act really doesn't match the truth in my opinion.
Miranda Hobbes is a successful lawyer, now I am going to be a little different here, as she does seem to work a little more than the rest. She doesn't like getting too close to men and keeps her distance. She does end up with a bartender Steve and actually has a baby, the only one in the show. Although Miranda does give the impression that she is a bit of an ice queen
She is actually a lot softer than she makes out. You see her much softer nature in the last series, a definite side of her that you don't normally see, but a great versatile side to her character.
There are other characters, which are in the show some boyfriends, which are only in it for a small time, some more permanent boyfriends. One boyfriend who sticks out is Carries; he is called in the show only as Mr Big. He is played by Chris North, Carrie hooks up with him on numerous occasions, but does she end up with him? That is a question that you could ask yourself about the show, in the end you do find out. It did bug me to the fact that her is only known in the show as Mr Big? When watching the show you can notice that his whole character is fairly mysterious. Although he is in many episodes she don't actually find out much a bout him. All you know is he is successful and doesn't like commitment but you don't really know much else, was this the writers intentions? I will tell you that you do find out his name in the last episode, so you will have to watch it to find out.
From the first seasons towards the end you see a big change in the way the characters are portrayed. At first it emphasises more on their relationships and sex lives. Towards the end they develop their characters a lot more. The story I found interesting was when Samantha had breast cancer. They showed that it is a disease that effects all types of women and showed Samantha's fight and determination not to let the disease beat her, it was almost inspiring. The other topics that sex and the city have covered is:
Infertility
Homosexuality
Adultery
Pregnancy
Abortion
Dementia
Although it's not a show that is high on topical subjects its more entertainment mixed with some comedy, I do feel that the topical subjects that they have included they have done it well.
All in all not a bad show to watch (when made to) I actually found it quite interesting to watch from a mans point of view. when i asked my wife if thats what women really talk about all the time, meaning sex and realtionships she did point out that now for her and her friends its more like children and the price of washing powder!
A few bugbare on the show that I just have to add:
As stated before they never seem to work much
They go out all the time
They always eat out, even at breakfast
All they talk about is men and sex
They never do any housework
They spend far too much money on clothes etc, how much do they earn?
They over analyse every relationship
They make most men out to be pigs except a few
They spend too much time together, where do they get the time?
Summary: great watch but more for men than women

- 06/06/09 It is a bit exagerrated but I think all men should watch this to understand how women tick! |

- 05/06/09 It is a bit hard to swallow with some of the things it gets up to. But it is hilarious I think.
Kim Cattrall more so than the others.
I think you read far too much into the show though lmao. |

- 04/06/09 Do you mean "more for women than men" in your summary?! My partner doesn't choose to watch this but he does find some bits funny when he does. |
