~*~ Sex and the City ~*~

I'm quite sure that pretty much everyone is at least somewhat familiar with Sex and the City; with the amount of publicity it has had recently what with the film release, it has been pretty hard to avoid! However, for those of you that are unaware (shame on you!), Sex and the City is an American sitcom first aired in the US in 1998. The show ended on its six season in 2004. The show is set in New York city and is based around the lives of four 30-something women.

~*~ The characters ~*~

Carrie Bradshaw - she narrates each episode, which sounds strange as she also acts, but it works surprisingly well. This allows viewers to feel a real connection with Carrie and her thoughts and ideas. Carrie is the star of the show - she is a writer for the New York Star, with her own column 'Sex and the City'. Her own personal life often finds its way into her column, which can cause problems for Carrie.

Miranda Hobbs - Carrie's best friend. Miranda is a intelligent lawyer and very smart and intellectual. She is also very cynical and straight to the point, and puts the other girls in line when they start to go off track.

Charlotte York - Charlotte is the sweet and innocent member of the group. She is romantic, sensitive and thoughtful and places great importance on finding 'the one'. Although seemingly innocent, however, she manages to surprise the other girls from time to time by revealing things she has done in the past!

Samantha Jones - Definitely the most extrovert character! Samantha loves sex, and talking about it takes up most of her time! Samantha has a high-flying career in PR which allows her to meet a series of rich, succesful men, but she has no interest in relationships and has more of a mans approach to dating.

~*~ The cast ~*~

Sarah Jessica Parker - Carrie - Sarah Jessica Parker plays this character extremely well with the perfect balance of humour. She adds life to the character and style, and I can't imagine anyone else playing Carrie better than her! Carrie is the most fashion-forward of all of the sex and the city girls, and Sarah pulls this off effortlessly, which is a big conquest seeing some of the outfits Carrie is required to wear for the show!

Kim Cattrall - Samantha - Kim has starred in a series of films and also acted in other TV series. She is a well established actress and plays the role of Samantha well. Samanthas character is very brash and confident, and Kim oozes confidence on set. She acts the role very well.

Cynthia Nixon - Miranda - Although Miranda has appeared in films and shows previous to SATC, the show is what she is most famous for. She plays the intelligent but often dizzy and frustrated character of Miranda and pulls it off easily. She acts well making the character totally believeable and loveable.

Kristin Davis - Charlotte - Also appeared in a few things previously (including a cameo in Friends!) Kristin plays the role amazingly well. She is a brilliant actress and makes the character believeable and 'sparkly'. It would have been easy for her character to appear boring due to the straight-laced ways of Charlotte, but Kristin adds that bit of magic and humour needed to make her character interested.

The cast of SATC work extremely well together - there is chemistry between the characters and you can really imagine them being friends off-set as well as on. I really couldn't imagine a better set of actresses being chosen to play Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda!

~*~ The verdict ~*~

I don't want to go too much into the plot of SATC, I will save that for my reviews on the individual series'. However! I will say that the show revolves around sex and relationships, and a lot of the conversations had between the girls are a bit risque. Nothing is left unsaid by the girls, so if you feel uncomfortable watching people talking about (and having!) sex, then this isn't for you. And probably not something to watch with your nan either! One of my favourite things about the show is how they cover issues that happen in real life in a straight forward, to-the-point way. Ok, so some of the story lines are a bit far out, but in general a lot of the plot is based on everyday things that happen, for example infidelity, erectile dysfunction, farting in front of your new boyfriend and frienship.

To sum up, Sex and the City is probably my favourite TV show ever, I love it for a bit of escapism and it always puts a smile on my face. Definitely reccommend!

Summary: A great series with brilliant acting
