The Six Million Dollar Man was a 1970s American action adventure series that starred Lee Majors as a former Astronaut, Steve Austin, who was so badly injured in an accident that as a scientific experiment he underwent a rebuilding process of his body and in effect became a Cyborg. The story is based on Martin Caldin's 1972 novel "Cyborg"
The parts and repairs that were fitted to Steve's body were his right arm, both legs and his left eye. These were known as "Bionic" parts. Bionic means biologically engineered.
These fittings, parts and enhancements gave him some super human powers. He was able to run at 60 miles per hour, had incredible strength in his right arm and his left eye could see in the dark and had a 20 times zoom lens on it!
The bionic repairs were funded by the government and therefore it was natural that Steve would be working for government intelligence solving crimes, apprehending criminals and generally protecting his country from harm.
I was a young child when this was screened and it was my favourite programme. Lee Majors was a very masculine looking man with chiseled good looks and a tough sportsman like physique. He had played American Football in real life to a fairly high level but had to stop due to a bad injury.
Steve Austin was many small boys hero and we all wanted to be like him. The show itself had exciting fast moving plots and the element of espionage added further to its allure. I have not seen it recently but if it were repeated I would tune in from a nostalgia point of view.
Such was the popularity of the programme at the time that the boy's/man's name Lee which up until then had hardly ever been used in Great Britain suddenly became very popular for new born baby boys.
As a quick piece of evidence to back this claim up, in the mid 1990s (20 years after the programme was screened) nearly every professional football team in England had at least one player called Lee in their squad and many had 2 or 3.
The name Lee is still popular but most seen amongst men born in the mid to late 1970s.
Summary: One Of The Top Action Shows Of The 1970s
