Advantages: A good drama

Disadvantages: Sometimes a little week on the writing.

Smallville is the latest televised version of the Superman saga, this time telling the story of the early life of Clark Kent et al. It starts off based in the name giving Smallville, a small town in Kanvas, with the first season essentially being used to set up the characters of the main cast. The first few seasons follow the high school years but sadly offer very little in the way of revelations to the story, with Clark mostly battling against 'meteor freaks' that have been caused by the meteor shower in which he arrived. As the seasons progress though the story does become more complex with the Luthor family becoming more and more involved in finding out Clark's secret life providing a set up to the fated rivalry between Lex and Clark and providing us with a bit more of a central villain to focus on.

Since this time we've also seen the introduction of Superman and DC staples such as Lois Lane and Oliver Queen the Green Arrow, as well as season eight's main villain, Doomsday.

The show has in my mind started to get a bit lost in it's own writing, at points through season eight it seemed like the episodes just didn't fit together anymore, with one episode in particular just pulling plot points from nowhere in the hope of dramatic effect - Jimmy Olsen being one huge huge example of this.

The show has just been renewed for a season nine which according to promo photos will focus on Chloe, Clark, Lois and Oliver.

Summary: A good bit of fantasy once a week.
