Advantages: Great fun, with some fantastic in jokes and cameos
Disadvantages: Some episodes are really terrible
There are a lot of fanboys out there that hate Smallville, but, if you take it for what it is, a fun, adventure of a TV show, you might just find yourself loving it.
The show is basically Superman: The Early Years, or technically, Superboy, as it follows a teenage Clark Kent (Tom Welling), living in Smallville, years before he will become Superman.
He is surrounded by friends and family, such as his adoptive parents, his friends Chloe, Pete, his best friend and enemy to be, Lex, and the girl he is in love with, Lana.
The show is currently on it's ninth season, and over the years, the show has progressed from an X-Files style, freak-of-the-week format, to more arc based stories. These story-arcs ranged from the great to the stupid - Lana as a witch anyone?
In later series, things tied together a bit more, and things really started to take shape. More and more elements from the Superman universe began to appear, such as the unnamed Justice League, featuring Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman and Cyborg to name a few. Lois also makes her entrance, as do Jimmy, Clark's cousin Supergirl, and many others, including the amazing appearance of Doomsday!!
The show can often be quite hit and miss, but if you are a comic fan, or a Superman fan, you will love al the in jokes and cameos. The current season is widely rumoured to be the final season, so I think we will start to see things come to a head. We have already seen a variation of the Superman 'suit' (which kinda made Clark look more like Batman), and also [Major] Zod has just arrived, looking like he will be behind the whole season.
Smallville is a very fun show, even though it is not really the greatest representation of the Superman mythos. The acting in some cases can be great, but in others, can sometimes be terrible. The whole Clark and Lana romance was probably one of the most annoying I have ever seen, but in retrospect, it kinda makes the current boding love affair between Clark and Lois just so more great.
Well worth watching!
Summary: More often than not, a fun and engaging action show, that I'm sure you will love
