Smiley's PeopleNewest Review: ... much the same labyrinthine way as Tinker Tailor, but the audience really doesn't know what the purpose of it all is until well past the halfway mark. Although in retrospect this can be seen to have worked quite well - we're as much in the dark as Smiley - when you first watch it, it can seem like a bit of a nightmare, trying to remember who everyone is and what they said hours ... more |

This is the sequel to the hugely acclaimed and popular series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Produced by the BBC in 1982, it again stars Alec Guinness as the semi-retired spy George Smiley. It was originally broadcast in seven episodes, and, like Tinker Tailor, was based on a novel by John Le Carré. In Tinker Tailor, Smiley had to come out of retirement in order to find a double agent (or 'mole') who had infiltrated the British secret service (presumably MI6, but only referred to as 'The Circus').
