Advantages: People get a complete "made under" new look
Disadvantages: Very Predictable , sometimes they make the people look just as bad
On quite a rare occasion Mr Lools and I had no plans on a Friday night. We bought in a couple of bottle of wine and decided to have a quiet one in front of the TV. We were not looking for a film to watch as I was quite fidgety and I wanted some light viewing. SNOG, MARRY , AVOID seemed to fit into that category when we randomly came across the programme when browsing the TV channels.
Song, Marry , Avoid is on BBC3 times vary due to the erratic BBC3 schedule. I find generally the BBC3 TV schedule to be ever changeable to mix the small picking of new programmes with the many repeats that are repeatedly shown. SNOG, MARRY AVOID features in the repeat category and is shown in general between 8pm and 10pm and the show is 30 mins in length.
The programme is a make under programme in which a person who is heavily made up, pierced or just generally very unnatural looking comes on the show for a more natural look. The colour of the tans of some of the girls is deep orange and the clothes are shocking which they seem almost proud of. I wear false tan but I would consider if I ever turned out this colour a complete tanning disaster. One of the girls featured on the show wore a top which consisted of black tape which was placed over her shoulders in a criss cross to cover her boobs but not much else, this was teemed with a tiny tutu skirt. Fair play for actually having courage to go out like that!! . Her style ... in her own words ... "like Jodie March" .
The programme is presented by Jenny Frost, who is made to look quite plain, both in the clothing she wears and made up with "natural" make up. Despite the "natural" make up look it is apparent she is heavily styled and it looks like she is wearing a large amount of make up to achieve the look which is rather ironic considering the key message of the programme is encourage the contestants to look natural. Frost doesn't actually play a large part she talks to the girls before and then after when they return weeks after the make under. The real star is POD. The computer voiced machine which actually "performs" the make under. The contestants go and see POD and make a series of choices about their new look all options of which are very natural. This included, hair style, make up, and clothing style. POD is quite sharp and insulting about the contestants original look, some contestants take this banter in good humour, others seem quite insulted. Most of the people appearing on the show actually want to change their look, but usually have been encouraged to go on the show by a friend or family member. In some cases POD decides the person is not suitable for the make under, from what I have seen this is mostly in the cases when the person is actually not that interested in changing their look.
Before the poll a selection of the puplic are asked if they would SNOG, MARRY or AVOID the person being made under in their unnatural looking state.... You have guessed it, most of the people polled would AVOID, which then comes as a great shock to the person who is being made under.
My favourite part of the programme is when the contestants are just about to undergo the make under and POD asked them to take off their make up / and or piercings/ any other unnatural things that they are wearing. Taking off the make up is brilliant, the girls go from tango orange to white like ghosts. Most of the girls look pretty bad/ some presentable with make up on but when they take it off it's a shock like a completely different person. Being mean some of them look so rough, the majority though look a lot better once you can actually see their natural features.
The actually make under is not seen. The contestant is shown before and then after they have selected their choices that POD has given to them they appear again on the screen, (phased onto the screen like they have stepped out of a time machine) in their new look. The contestant usually looks more natural but in many cases very plain and dowdy, but this is always an improvement on how they used to look.
The contestants are then shown the results of the poll of SNOG, MARRY , AVOID and yes more people now want to MARRY or SNOG the person . Usually this is a lot higher. One episode did make me laugh in which "60% of the people who we asked wanted to SNOG or MARRY you" do the maths people 60 % still wanted to avoid the poor girl which is more than half. The contestant is then let out into outside world to see their friends and family who are usually shocked and then cry at how "amazing" the person now looks!!
Frost then has an interview with the person weeks after the original make under asking if they have kept their new look and focuses on how people have changed their attitude towards them now they look more natural. The show despite having different people on the show is a carbon copy each episode, and the contestants are not very memorable. Most of which are very positive and decide to keep their new look.
There are usually two make unders per show, sometimes three depending on which episode that you watch.
It's very much verging on car crash TV and the overall message is aimed to be about "natural beauty" but in fact I feel the show actually is very superficial and all about judging people based upon their appearance. Watching this sober is not fun, after a few glasses of wine its bearable and in parts quite funny!
Summary: Definitely not quality viewing, laughable after a few glasses of wine
