Disadvantages: The Presenters and Tim Lovejoys legacy

Soccer A.M. used to be unmissable TV up until around 3 or 4 years ago, now i can take it or leave it.

The show first aired in 1995 on Sky Sports 1 with presenters Helen Chamberlain and Russ Williams but it wasn't until Russ Williams was replaced by Tim Lovejoy did this show really kick off.

The show is on from 9am until 12pm every Saturday and is quite a simple format, show highlights and goals from all the previous weeks games from all the English divisions and inbetween have funny segments by the presenters and the crew members (who have become as much apart of the show as the presenters themselves) and a host of great guests to talk about football or generally what they are plugging. It will also do a previews of the days main games and even go to the grounds of the early kick offs to get team news and info.

From 1996 til around 2005 this show was so brilliant i never used to mind getting up after a heavy night on a Friday plonk myself down on the sofa with a coffee and sit there until 12pm. But then the inevitable happened Tim Lovejoy began to get too big for his football boots and started to use the show to showcase his quite dreadful musical knowledge whilst Helen Chamberlain was just beginning to get more and more annoying. Tim Lovejoy left in 2007 to persue other avenues and has been replaced with a host of different people and his place is now taken by the truly bland Max Rushden.

They have still retained some of the comedy elements as there are still the existing crew members such as the quite fantastic Tubes plus Rocket and Baby Elvis who do their level best to try and add the much needed relief in what is a 3 hour TV show but i personally believe its too much to ask for even them.

It is not exactly the shows fault that this has become quite dull its the fact that the shows presenters became to pretentious and believed their own hype and is to the detrement of the enjoyment of a show that had everything.

I will still watch this show occasionally for the goals, to see who the guests are, the showboat and that it now shows highlights from Spanish football. But i rarely go out of my way anymore which is a real shame
