Advantages: authentic

Disadvantages: none

WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
The Sopranos follows the Italian mafia in modern day American, through Tony Soprano and his crew in New Jersey. The show is divided between Tony's gangster life in all its bloody violence, and his complex home-life with his wife and two children. The show ran six seasons.

IS IT ANY GOOD:
As regular readers of my reviews will know by now, I have watched a lot of TV in my time, and my number one favourite show ever is The Sopranos. It's so good because of many things:

1) The mafia link - The show is an authentic look at the modern life of the mafia; there's plenty of murder, but it's moved towards business and industry, infiltrating the construction business, waste management and more. The mafia side to the show is completely realistic.

2) The family link- this show spends a lot of time dealing with the modern day family and all the stresses it can bring. Issues such as work/life balance, education, parenting, infidelity and friendship are all covered with the same brilliance that the show covers the mafia side of things.

3) The characters - Tony Soprano, Paulie Walnut, Silvio Dante and the rest of the crew are phenomenally written and acted characters. They are totally believable, and tread the fine line between being likeable whilst never forgetting the innate violence that is behind them.

4) The dialogue - the dialogue in this show is rich and authentic - completely believable and realistic but entertaining too.

5) The new characters each season. In each of the six seasons, a new major character is introduced, along with their own plot, to keep the story fresh and exciting.

WARNING:
There's a lot of swearing, nudity and violence in this show. It's no wonder it was on HBO, as many other channels wouldn't even touch it.

IF YOU LIKED IT:
There are lots of authentic mafia movies out there: The Godfather 1,2,3, Goodfellas and Casino are all worth watching. There's also a Sopranos book 'The Complete Guide', which contains behind the scenes interviews and pics.

IN CONCLUSION:
A masterpiece of modern TV, the Sopranos is a wonderful show that will never grow old.

Summary: love it

I borrowed all the series from a friend.
I'm ashamed to say that I'd sit and watch
three or four episodes at one sitting. Just one more....well maybe two! Flippin excellent.

Huge fan of the series and sad to see it go:< I have replaced it with The Wire.

I spent 3 weeks watching the entire boxset last September and it was awesome, however your warning section doesn't mention Tony's annoying brat son...how come he couldn't have got whacked!! lol
