Space 1999

It seems a lot of the TV series that were originally shown in the 1970's have all made a bit of a recent comeback, mainly on ITV4 who seem to have purchased the whole ITC back catalogue. Another shining example of a series that should have gone further was Space 1999. The future was always a bit of a grey area when it came to seventies sci-fi, you could work on the lunar surface and travel between the Earth and the Moon easily and yet seventies fashions hadn't actually gone out of style!! With the cancellation of the most excellent UFO due to a lack of funds, Gerry Anderson's production company was left not only with the need to come up with a new concept, but with sets they had specially designed for the now cancelled series. SPACE: 1999 was a live-action science fiction series created by Gerry Anderson, who also created many popular puppet sci-fi series including THUNDERBIRDS and STINGRAY. When this programme first appeared on our screens some 30 or more years ago, 1999 seemed to be so far into the future that story tellers could write anything they liked. They envisaged that with the nuclear waste problem on Earth forever becoming a larger problem, man had dumped all the radioactive material in one huge buried dump on the Moon. Monitored of course. I love old Sci-fi series'. mainly becuase they are funny, I dont suppose they are suppose to be funny but they are now. I love to look at the special effects ( well not so special thats why they are funny). The show is about a few people living on the moon at moon base Alpha and facing various enemy's of "great power". Starring Martin Landau in his quality white flared trousers, this show has really hit it off with me.
