Advantages: Very well acted and great writting
Disadvantages: uncertain future
It's good to know that you don't have to be brain dead to enjoy modern sitcoms. I was starting to wonder if everyone in the world enjoyed body humor. Then I discovered Spin City and my faith was restored. Most sitcoms from the States (I'm American..i'm allowed to complain :) ) seem to be aimed at teenagers. It only stands to reason since they are the ones spending hours in front of the box and are the ones most likey to buy the junk in the comercials. The problem is that even when I was a teenager I hated stupid comendy. Spin City is for those of us with a little bit of brain power that like a lot of subtle humour and a little bit of side splitting laughter. Micheal J Fox has always been a brilliant TV actor. I know that most of you over here only really know him from the movies but prior to hitting it big in the films he was on an 80's tv show called Family Ties. At its peak (it was on for a very long time) this show was one of the most popular on American television. Fox played a character called Alex P. Keaton..a teenager obsessed with being a member of the Republican party ( sort of like being a torry...think William Hauge as a teen) while living with a liberal family. He became very well known for his comdey timing and it was a common joke that the Emmy for Best Comedy Actor should be retired because he won it so often. Even now young republicans are reffered to as an Alex P. Keaton type. So, I was glad to see that he was doing another tv show but I was afraid that it wouldn't be as good. I was very please to see that it was just as good and actually much better. Family Ties was great but it is a different kind of show. There are little things that you might have to be an American to appreciate but they are in no way essential to the show. For example, the actress that plays Mike's mom is the same actress that played his mom on Family Ties (Mertidth Baxter). It is another one of
the shows that benifits from havig a number of strong characters. All of them brings something to the show. Stuart is a great character..the guy you love to hate. The mayor is a great dumb guy ( Rocky Horror fans will of course notice that the mayor is played by Barry Bostwick AKA Brad!). I'm a bit worried that Fox has recently left the show for health reasons. I am especially worried because Charlie Sheen is taking over (by the way..a little bit of info you might need for a triva contest one day...Q: What do Charlie Sheen and the guy who plays Stuart have in common? A: They were both in Ferris Buhler's Day Off - Charlie's first acting roll..i'm full of useless info like that). However, I would just be happy if the Paramount Channel would get some new episodes and stop reshowing the same handul of shows.
