Advantages: Funny one-liners

Disadvantages: nothing stands out

Amazing or atrocious. That’s the gist of most of my opinions. I write about my favourite things, or things which irritate me beyond belief. A change is needed.
Spin City?? I know I used to watch this. Michael J Fox was in it. A Mayors assistant? I can't really remember. This was middle of the road comedy. It doesn't stand out in my mind. They won't repeat this in twenty-five or thirty years like many great sitcoms. Spin City wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I would probably watch it, but to be a good sitcom, the writing has to be first rate. I love Friends, and it has a winning format, but like Spin City, it's just jokes. One-liners. There's hardly any clever comedy in it. This is true more in Spin City than in Friends. The scenes are short, with quick punch lines. If you compare this to Fawlty Towers, the structure is totally different. Comic ideas would continue right through an episode of Fawlty Towers, or Only Fools and Horses. jokes are built up and come as a surprise, packed in with quick jokes and funny one-liners, but there's nothing hysterical I can remember about Spin City. There may have been funny jokes which I did laugh at, but I will never forget Basil Fawlty shoving Manuel into the kitchen as he shouts 'is fire is! fire is! fire!' and Basil shouts 'is not fire is drill' or when Del and Rodney held the blanket under the chandelier as I waited to see what went wrong. It's not just jokes. Jokes can be forgotten.
