Stand-up Show

Newest Review: ... to expect. Also, as standing up on stage will obviously take a lot of courage, you can be sure that the performances will do what they intend and not get effected by nerves. The show lasts for 30 minutes, and in this time you get 3 or four acts. They are each about 5 minutes in length, intermitted by a few one liners and introduction of the next act by the host. The show used to be hosted by Ardal O'Hanlon, who shot to fame as Dougal McGuire in the hit show Father Ted. He was funny in that, but in relevant stand up terms, was average. Now the show is hosted by a 'authentic' stand up commedian, Tommy Tiernan - must be an Irish... more

The stand up show is a programme that gives comedians the chance to give a routine, in front of a studio audience. The acts are from well known names and therefore, if you like stand up, can have a fairly good idea of what to expect. I have to say I am huge fan of the Stand up Show, and watch it whenever it’s on. It’s important to me because I don’t subscribe to any digital or satellite packages so my choice of comedy is rather limited. Comedy shows are abundant on ‘terrestrial’ television, however these are usually the more ‘established’ comedians, and usually there isn’t much stand up, basically they are all sitcoms or comedy related drama, for example Friends or The Royle Family, which are great in their own right, but they are produced at the expense of ‘proper’ comedy i.e. making a crowd laugh, STAND UP. The Stand up Show is ...  Read the complete review

The Stand-Up show is one of the funniest programmes on TV at the moment, and it's broadcast every Saturday night on BBC ONE. Funny-man Tommy Tierman (previously Adral O Hanlon) introduces the show, which see many new and recognised comedy faces taking the stand-up stage. It's refreshing to see new up-and-coming comedians take to the stage these days, as it's this generation that will produce the comedy geniuses of the future - people like Dom Jolly (Trigger Happy TV), and Ed Byrne who is currently touring the UK, thanks to the success of The Stand Up Show. Just like the Comedy Store, people come here to see what reaction they'll get from the ...  Read the complete review

This is the late night breeding ground for young comedians. Although there is no guarantee of quality, and some acts can be terrible, the standard is usually high, with the show producing some real pearlers. Hosted at first by the Ardal O’hanlon, and now the equally funny Tommy Thierny, the show unearths some of the UK’s funniest new comedians, and will be the first chance most people have to see acts such as Richard Blackwood performs stand up routines. The only problems is the show is on a Saturday night, at a different time very week and usually around 1am, most people are still out, or in bed by then. It is, however, invariably worth watching. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Stand-up Show: Hit and Miss, but always one great set (83 words)

What amazes me is how many genuinely funny comedians this programme continues to find. OK so I've never heard of most of them, and some of them have humour that doesn't travel surprisingly particularly some of the American comics, but you can virtually guarantee that each programme will have one excellent slot from somebody you'll want to remember. Many comedians have gone on to better things from this series and deservedly so. I compliment the booking agent for this show. ...  Read the complete review
