Advantages: fun, entertaining

Disadvantages: a little too happy-ending at times

Star Trek always seems to get a bad press - or possibly a sad press, as apparently you have to be a sad no-lifer to be a fan.
Seems a bit unfair, really, since it's one of the classic sci-fi series - I'm in a minority who still think the original series is the best - which has now branched out into more hi-tech sci-fi combined with soap-style drama, and covered both long-term stories with hour long episodes.
In fact, Star Trek now seems to cover just about all aspects you can with a sci-fi series. It still seems to be a little "happy ending", which was always a bit of a problem with the original series - you always knew a new character in a red shirt would die, and that everything would be right in the end. Everything is still right in the end, but sometimes it takes a little longer for the end to come (ie, a series rather than an episode).
