Advantages: interesting technology
Disadvantages: soap opera syndrome
As a strong fan of the original Star Trek series, I naturally took a great interest in each of the successive offerings. In the case of Voyager and The Next Generation I gradually became accustomed to their specific values and learned to appreciate what they had to offer. However, Deep Space 9 is a totally different story. The early episodes were nothing to go wild about, but the situation and the good cross section of alien culture was very promising, so I expected things to improve. Sadly, things did anything but improve. In an attempt to generate interesting background stories for the characters it gradually fell to the level of a soap opera set in a space station. If the format had remained as a series, this could well have been an excellent program, but now has very little to offer. I understand that soap operas have a huge support and also that viewing figures are important, but I expect SF to be advertised as such and soaps to be advertised as soaps. This series is a great disappointment and should not carry the title of Star Trek.

- 05/12/00 It was weak to begin with, and got progressively mediocre as it went on. However I would have rated this higher than SU if you'd gone into the reasons why you dislike it a little... :) |

- 05/12/00 I think DS9 has a soapy feel because they are trying to run a long story arc along the lines of Babylon 5 as oposed to the episodic STNG. |

- 06/11/00 I mostly agree with you. There is the odd episode that I have really enjoyed and there is a lot of potential. Somehow though, they just don't seem to be able to unleash that potential. It's the only Star Trek programme that I regularly miss - most often because I simply forget! |
