Advantages: an excellent, and easy to like crew, storys, action, suspence, violence, star trek at it's best., dominion, best trek villians since the borg

Disadvantages: big time trekkies to my knowlegde have a somewhat different opinion on ds9, but it does'nt really matter, finished too early

Modern Trek, from the next generation, to voyager, is far from it's original kirk era. When the next generation started back in the late 80's not many took an interest in it, yet a year or two later, it was one of the highest rated shows, and breathed new life into the franchise, and demonstrated that there was life after kirk. ds9 is unique, it's setting, it's darker storys, and the cast. Now i'll admit when i first heard about ds9, ( hard to beleive it started 10 years ago ), i was'nt interested, i could'nt see how it could work, but i was quite taken by it, ( which is strange as like the next generation it took a while to warm up ) it was fresh, and it's storys for the most did'nt dissappoint. Looking back on some of the early episodes now, I think it's fair to say, that some of them could have been done better, but there where various changes of plan for the series. It was a clever idea to base ds9 in the picard era, and mix in ds9, and tng storylines, quite a good way to get the audience interested, infact some tng episodes involved ds9 in some way. But ds9 could'nt realy on tng, as a year later tng would be axed to make way for new movies. ds9 helped carry on what tng had started, but like i said various changes took place, and i'll say wht later.

general story:
deep space nine is a former cardassian space station, that was built during the cardassian occupation of bajor. when bajor at last rid itself of the cardassians, they took ds9 too, and the federation, on request came in to assist with bajor's revival. But things heated up when a worm-hole ( short cut through space ), was discovered, that was also home to a powerful alien race, where worshiped by the bajorans. sisko ( ds9's commander ) became a bajorian emissary, and ever since had to be both a spiritual figure, and a starfleet commander ( and later captain )

That was how it started out, and how it was origianlly meant to cont
inue, but plans change. Like I said, that was the origianl plan, with the cardassians playing the role of the main villians. But the cardassians proved to be a somewhat stale villians, and the storys seemed to be going in no particular direction. This all changed with the introduction of the dominion, who proved to be far more interesting villians. the dominion storylines took star trek to a new level, we found out odo's roots ( odo was a shape shifter, who for a long time never knew his home ), we saw the classic trek rivals unite against a common foe, the cardassians went from bad, to good, as they fought to over-throw dominion rule, and the dominion have to be one of sci-fi's greatest villians. where as picard and his crew took on kirk's role, and at times where a real bunch of push-overs, sisko and his crew, where for the majority of the time not. they where made up of tough characters, all eager to do their job and do it right. sisko is on par with picard, some may say he's better, he's easily better when it comes to quick think. ds9 was very dark, we saw the plight of races, great ship battles, political senarios, huge conspiracys, loyalty been put to strains. And some of trek's greatest episodes are in here, from the dominion war, to special episodes such as " troubles and tribble-ations ", to celebrate star trek's 30th anniversary, the ds9 crew by accident ravel back to kirk's era, where they have to prevent him from being killed. it's a great episode, and the way they mixed in ds9's crew in scenes with the origianl crew is amasing. ds9 ended too early in my opinion, and has left many questions. but it's easily on par, if not better than tng, and as for voyager.........don't ask, i won't waste my time. great stroylines, excellent characters, superbly played out by the cast, some of trek's best episode, was a breath of fresh air.

Summary:
