Advantages: good characters, decent storyline
Disadvantages: limited technology
As a fan of the original Star Trek series, I have watched the basic idea expand in numerous directions over the years. The introduction of The Next Generation was virtually inevitable because Star Trek remained popular but the actors were aging beyond acceptance. The addition of Voyager and Deep Space Nine were equally understandable to provide further viewing hours without overplaying a single story. However, the introduction of Enterprise is something I cannot understand. Despite the varied situations and characters portrayed in the other versions of the story, each has the advantage of being able to create and use new technology on a frequent basis. It was this idea of futurism that made the original series such a great success, with warp drives, phasers and universal translators to entertain the viewer. Now we have Enterprise, based on the first crew of the Starship and pre-dating Captain Kirk. So far the series has proved to be quite acceptable, realistic characters and a few good stories have managed to provide some decent episodes. The problem is that the series is severely restricted to technology that existed in the first series. Without the option of anything different, the program is unlikely to maintain it's current viewing figures because it cannot move ahead.

- 30/04/02 I agree with what you say when it comes to how limited the program will be technologically-wise, but I think it will be quite interesting to see Entreprise laying the foundations for the inter-species relations that we have come to know well in the Next Generation, Voyager and Deep Space Nine. |
