Star Trek - The Next GenerationNewest Review: ... around a bit here, with Thasha Yar cheif of security for most of series 1, Dr. Crusher being dropped for series 2 but then coming back and Whoppi Goldberg taking on a recurring guest role. Second in command, Riker, I have never liked. A bad character acted badly, same with Will Crusher. These are two characters the series really could have done without. Other than that it was a great crew, now with an android and a klingon on board now giving a more universal feel. Favourites include Encounter at Farpoint, by Gene Roddenberry with the malevolnt alien Q, All Good Things, Casue and Effect, Q Who (introduces the borg). The absolute best tho... more |

This is the only Star Trek sequel created by Gene Roddereny and now has Patrick Stewart commanding a later model of the enterprise (his character Picard and Kirk even meet in Generations). Star Trek the Next Generation hence forward called TNG is a TV series made by paramount in the mid eighties, it told the story of the federation approximately 60 years after the original Star Trek series. TNG was at its peak the highest rated TV show in America and ran for 9 series, TNG is considered by most Star Trek fans as the best of the canon and re-invented a dieing franchise. A bit of history - In the 1960's Gene Roddenberry invented a sci-fi show which featured a ship on a 5 year mssion which explored strange new planets and places, to boldly go as the English lit experts hate with that split infinitive. Anyway the series was after initial slowness ... Read the complete review

In many ways, Star Trek: The Next Generation is far superior to the original series, with William Shatner as Captain Kirk. This version, set many years after the original, is now captained by Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), a thinking man's captain instead of Kirk's brute force and arrogance. Now blessed with much better special effects, due to a much larger budget, the show can also boast some fine actors amongst the crew, even if some of them can seriously overact at times, and would surely give Shatner a run for his money. The one most guilty of this, in my opinion, is Picard's second in command, William Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes. ... Read the complete review

Star Trek The Next Generation (TNG) was a late, but welcome, continuation of the sci-fi series that really did boldly split infinitives so well. Before de-constructing some of the rather implausible plots, it's worth dwelling on the characterisation for a spell. Having a Shakespearean (and a Yorkshireman) actor on the crew (as a French Captain) was a masterstroke, giving the series a necessary degree of gravitas and thespian credibility, in my humble opinion. The rest of the cast, one presumes, are well-travelled US actors with the probable exception of Marina Sirtis, who was born in London of Greek origin, and I remember seeing playing an Italian woman in ... Star Trek: The Next Generation began its long television and movie run in 1986 after the massive success of the trek movies. After the original episode, 'Encounter at Farpoint' the show had a seven season run on TV screens ending with what is perhaps the best of all the star trek finales 'All Good Things'. Since then we've had a cross over film with the Original series cast and three other movies showcasing the Enterprise crew. For many people The Next Generation managed to do the impossible and surpass the Original Series. It was the Trek show that a whole generation grew up watching and what ignited their love of the Star Trek universe. I unfortunately ... Read the complete review
