Advantages: Sorts out families in trouble and teaches parenting techniques

Disadvantages: uses language that a young child wouldn't understand

Super nanny to the rescue. I have managed to catch this programme at some point most weekends but I have no idea what time of channel.

Jo Frost is super nanny. People call in super nanny to straighten out there unruly brats only to be told by super nanny after a day of observation that it is their fault the child misbehaves.

Super nanny arrives at the house watches the parents fail to control the children and observes the parents and children's behaviour. She then sits with the parents and goes over what she has seem. Super nanny's favourite word is unacceptable and everything is unacceptable.

She then sits the family down together and sets ground rules and consequences. this amuses me when she is working with children under 5 years old as they don't understand a word she is saying basically she says the children will have consequences to there actions and they will be disciplined for behaviour that is unacceptable. She then introduces the good old trusty naughty step if children break the rules they get two warnings (Warning 1 "please stop doing that it is dangerous. Warning two "that behaviour is unacceptable) 3 thing after the warnings is on the naughty step. The timings on the naughty step are based on the Childs age a minute for every year of there life. (3 and a half-year-old 3 minutes) The naughty step is often a stall, spot, arrow etc not always a step.

Super nanny puts the rules in place shows the parents how to do the naughty step warnings etc then leaves them to it for a week. During that week super nanny watches video footage and goes back to the family to correct any problems and reinforce the rules.

The rules include playing, as a family etc, which I think, is what makes the different more than the disciple does. The focus is on positive praise and spending time playing and being a family.

Super nanny tackles biting, swearing, scratching, running off, clinging etc you name it she covers it (everything also has technique on the end.)

Super nanny's 100's of techniques have names that really make me laugh sometimes.

~off the hip technique (for kids that are carried too much)
~Return to bed technique (for children that get out of bed)
~eat as a family technique (where you eat together as a family)
~off the boob technique (I loved that one laughed for hours that is the technique to stop breastfeeding)

Super nanny tackles the underlying issue whenever possible by talking to the children about there feeling and she looks for the reason that the child is lashing out.

By the time, super nanny leaves the children that hated her for coming in and turning there, life upside down love her to bits and are in tears as she leaves. She seems to turn around all the families. The end shots are generally happy kids and parents running around playing and laughing together.

Super nanny has done programmes with children in England and in USA. I like the English version better.

This programme is great for picking up techniques and I always feel like a better parent after watching it however bad your kids are she is dealing with worse!

The only concern I do have is that people try to copy her techniques but they break the rules like the minute of every year on the naughty step and make stuff up which does not help them or there kids.

Summary: Super nanny is full of great ideas. Play with the kids talk to them and make rules

I find it amusing when parents wonder why their children shout and swear at them when often the kids are just copying Mum and Dad's behaviour! Supernanny is brilliant at pointing out the bleedin' obvious....Good review, Caroline xx
