Advantages: Hmm, not many really
Disadvantages: Confusing, not for me or my son really
Teletubbies is a kids TV show with a bit of a difference. It features four creatures of humanoid form (the Teletubbies), each with a different coloured suit completely covering them, leaving only gaps for the face, ears and a rectangular grey box on their tummies, which later in the show reveals itself to be a TV screen! On top of their heads, they each have a different shap, either a spike, a diamond, a circle, or a two pronged spike.
If that wasn't strange enough, their names are Tinky Winky, Dipsy, La La and Po! Each episode features the four teletubbies as they live in their strange half underground half overground 'mound-hut', and are looked over by the sun, which appears as a normal sun save the fact it has a baby's giggling face in the middle!
The first time I watched this I was at University, and it served more as surreal entertainment than anything else. The show's format first has a selection of the four Teletubbies roaming round where they live, performing strange acts, before their TV tummies give us a short video clip of kids in school doing interesting tasks and experiments, or interacting with each other. I understand that the aim of the programme is to appeal to kids' imaginations and help them enjoy learning and show them good moral examples from school, but I know that my 4 year old finds it more entertaining than learning, and he laughs at the screen when the show is on.
However, this is short lived and he quickly loses interest in the show, especially as they show everything twice in one episode, preceded by one or more of the Teletubbies shouting 'Again!' in a squeaky baby voice. The only other things they seem to be able to say are their names and 'Eh-oh!' instead of 'Hello!'
Overall, I find it hard to recommend this to anyone, although I can see how some would find it entertaining and educational for their young ones. It is to stimulate babies' and young toddlers' interest in learning and to give them an example of something fun before going to school, and in this sense I guess it kind of fulfils its promise, but in such a weird fashion that I can't quite grasp it, and nor can my son or my wife.
The show is great for students who want a laugh when drunk, or very young kids for the repetition purpose, but for anyone else it's kind of lost.
Summary: Strange TV show
