Advantages: educational, fun
Disadvantages: it's for kids
As a 17 year old (it's my 18th birthday party tomorrow - worse!) I am disgusted with myself to be writing about the Teletubbies. The thing is, I just have to let it all out! The Teletubbies are one of those programmes develope to torment the minds of siblings and parents everywhere. I have a 20 month old brother (that's nearly two - please don't send the sympathy cards to my home address - he'll only eat them!). Ever since the age of 5 months he as been obsessed with the Teletubbies, much to my dispair. They were ok in the beginning, quite fun actually, but now (after seeing them 3 times a day, EVERY SINGLE DAY) I am very close to suicide (ok well maybe I wouldn't go that far - but if you'd have seen them that often - you'd feel the same!). Just for those of you who are complete nitwits, for those of you without a life, or for those who've been on Mars for the last god knows how long here's what they are: the teletubbies are big costumed guys jumping about everywhere. No,really, it's a children's programme with four cuddly characters - Tinky Winky, Dipsy, LaLa and Po (don't ask how they got those names!). Basically they make funny noises and try to speak baby speak. It's great for children up to about 2 because it combines colour, music and words. It is actually a good idea, and kids love it. It also helps kids speak, as my brother says more words now since watching it, like door and ball and lala and po. It's also good because it starts at about 10 in the morning, which is the time my brother wakes up, so he just kinda sits there hypnotised by the telly, and my mum and I can get him dressed with no hassle. Yesterday was the last straw though, the narrator was going on about how a puffy cloud entered their house. He commented on how the cloud was 'inconvenient' and the bloody teletubbie, that can't even say the word teletubbie, said 'inconve
nient' (they have an annoying habit of repeating the last word the narrator says!). To me that was rediculous, the programme is aimed at the under two's, I didn't learn that word til I was 12! Overall the Teletubbies are great for teaching young children things. and for stimulating their minds, but for adults it's hell, sheer hell.

- 15/11/01 Quite agree it is brain damaging for adults. Perhaps they should have some entertaining subtitles for adults at the same time. This could even turn it into some kind of cult programme. |
