Advantages: Rest and relaxation
Disadvantages: merchandising, poor langauge development and a bit dull for adults
Writing an opinion about the teletubbies as a card-carrying adult may seem a little strange but?. They are lifesavers. If you?ve never seen it before Tinky-Winky (the purple one) Dipsy (the green one) La-La (the yellow one) and Po (the red one) bimble around Teletubby land having way too much fun and gibbering in a incomprehensible tongue and hugging each other. Sounds like a winner? The program follows a very formulaic- Hello, cue kids waving at the telly ahhh! Off to the windmill, to see a short film projected on a random tubby belly. This is inevitably repeated, ?Again-Again!? the first phrase my daughter came out with. Fun and games, usually a bad dance sequence or Noo-Noo the vacuum cleaner does his stuff. A short animated film, they have a stock of about 10 films that are run in rotation. Then goodbyes (this gets the kids waving at the TV, ahhhh!). Because of this formula the kids do learn a lot, especially repetition of words, granted it doesn?t make a lot sense since the teletubbies do talk gibberish but they do enjoy it. Personally I can?t stand the teletubbies but, god bless auntie beeb, they perform a vital function, keeping the kids quiet for long enough to sit down and have a cup of tea. My one criticism of the tubbies is the amount of merchandising that has built up around it. Though not as all pervading as it has been, I don't think very small children should be exposed to marketing, they have plenty of opportunity in later life. Teletubbies is a vital part of the television schedule; this of course only really applies to under fives, stressed parents and students with too much time on their hands.
