Disadvantages: surreal, designed for a too young age-group
Well, I wasn't impressed when the teletubbies were first out on German TV, the second useless British import after the Spice Girls... :-) (just kidding) But seriously, the programme is designed as a show for toddlers, from 1 1/2 years...why on earth would children at that age need television in the first place? I think they shouldn't get used to TV at so early a stage. Besides I think the real world and realistic surroudings are still a challenge to cope with and to understand for young children so why create such a surreal world with stupid babbling fat little mothballs in a candy-coloured world. Honestly, the first time round I saw the programme, I thought someone must have spiked my drink and I was on LSD! No way would I let my children see that, they should first learn how the real world works. Sure imagination is important for children as well but this is an adult's view of what children's imagination might look like. I think that children understand much more than we would think, we often underestimate them, so I don't think it is very helpful that the teletubbies just babble along and have a more than limited vocab. Also the kinds of problems they meet in their teletubby world are not really significant in a child's life, are they? Still, children seem to love anything that's colourful, loud and annoying mum and dad so apparently they like the teletubbies... I wouldn't let my children watch it (at present I only have nieces and nephews and no kids of my own). I think it is not exactly a very challenging programme and might actually harm proper speech development if "overdosed". Eh-uh!
