Advantages: Thoughtful, intelligent and with great performances
Disadvantages: Maybe too slow for mainstream success
**Spoilers warning***
After watching the superb season finale to the already brilliant Terminator: Sara Connor Chronicles I felt compelled to wax verbose in support of another series and give my thoughts on the show as a whole.
Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles, (TSCC between you and I), has always done a great job of navigating the high-wire between credible action sequences and tight character exploration.
The season 2 finale especially continued this fine blend, threw in some real twists to keep us all guessing and included an unsettling yet oddly intimate scene between John and Cameron. (I'm still not sure if it's OK to be attracted to a terminator?!)
Rumours are abound that Fox, in another stunning display of idiocy are considering canning the show. Most likely in flavour of some other by-the-numbers cheese-fest to come off the Hollywood production line.
The studio seems to habitually axe any shows that dare to do something a little different. (Insert generic Joss Whedon rant here)
But the fact that TSCC runs against the grain is both it's greatest strength and it's potential failing.
Compared to shows like 24 the plot moves at a snails pace, something that may put off many, but what this does allow is a greater amount of character exploration, in particular the psychological effects that the constant trauma of life and death on a daily basis can have on a person.
The action, when it happens, is suitably visceral, and is more punchy for it's rarity. The acting is also top notch. Glau in particular has the special ability to look at once like a slightly off-human killing machine and a delicate teenage girl.
However in an increasingly immediate world will the slow meaningful approach pay off against the quick thrills of the other networks?
The season 2 finale was much heavier on the action, threw in some great set pieces and a change of pace in an attempt to secure another season. (or at least go out with a bang)
After a suitably epic experience we are left wondering; What will happen with John in the future? Is Weaver now lending her liquid metal to the good guys? and did Cameron really suspect a radiation leak in her chest or did she just want John to cop a feel?
I would love to say we will all find out the answer to all these but I guess we will have to wait and see.
Bottom Line - Come on Fox, the future is not yet written...
Summary: Smart but slow
