Advantages: enjoyable to watch and lessons to learn
Disadvantages: it would be difficult to recreate the same regime at home.
I really enjoy this programme, and have now (religiously) watched two o the USA series and two of the Australian series of the show. There has been a UK version, of which I watched a few episodes, but it was very disappointing compared to the other versions, so I'm hoping for an improved UK version!
The trainers Jillian Michaels, Bob Harper, Michelle Bridges and Shannan Ponton are all brilliant and very likable people who seem to genuinely care about the health of the contestants, even though they don't always seem to agree with the twists and turns of the game, they persevere as helpng the contestants to lose weight is their main concern.
The show has been slated for its 'quick results' methods, however I do not believe that the regime is that extreme, but more of a 'kick start' for the contestants. I agree that working out for 4 hours a day is not really realistic here in the real world, but the workouts the contestants do can be used and adapted to suit a more normal workout regime. Also the trainers promote healthy eating, and do not promote 'starvation' to lose weight, and are often stressing how important it is that the contestants eat the right amount of calories in order to fuel them through their workouts.
The show is entertaining and almost addictive, it has all the drama of a reality TV show, plus the remarkable transformations (both physical and emotional) of the contestants is very heartwarming and inspiring.
Although it would be hard to do the same things the contestants do in everyday life, there are many health and fitness lessons to be learned from watching the show, and if nothing else, the journey of the contestants is so motivating that anyone watching can't fail to start making changes to their own life to make themselves healthier and fitter!
Summary: the only time reality TV has ever motivated and inspired me!
