The Day Today

Newest Review: ... Paxman, half demented anarchist. The program ranges from biting satire on the fatuousness of much news programming - which Chris Morris would take much further in his Brasseye series - to a delight in the sheer silliness of the names they can make up for reporters/interviewees. My favourites are probably Peter O'Hanrahanrahan (probably the wrong number of 'hanrahans' in there!), the incompetent reporter loathed and bullied by Morris, Collately Sisters giving us the incomprehensible financial markets low down on the currency cat. The whole team play several characters each - and there's a huge amount of talent on show. To name but a fe... more

An early 90's classic taking the form of a spoof news show. This gave us a first TV outing for Alan Partridge who, of course, went on from strength to strength, and Chris Morris's eponymous news font man - half Jeremy Paxman, half demented anarchist. The program ranges from biting satire on the fatuousness of much news programming - which Chris Morris would take much further in his Brasseye series - to a delight in the sheer silliness of the names they can make up for reporters/interviewees. Why are all of the BBC's latest 'comedies' so bad? (Example: My Hero) They're so bland, boring, and the scripts are something you would expect to come from a CBBC show, not BBC shows. Back in the mid-nineties there was a comedy program that was superb - The Day Today. And what else could you expect from one of Chris Morris's creations? Chris Morris, the deeply controversial but also brilliantly funny front man from Brass Eye. You'll find The Day Today to be quite similar to Brass Eye (if not toned down a bit, and less controversial). So what is it? Well, it's a spoof news program with Chris Morris and Steve Coogan (The Parole ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Day Today: Today Too Good (398 words)

'The Day Today' was a BBC comedy news spoof which ran in the mid 1990's. It was the brainchild of Chris Morris, who later went of to greater infamy in Channel 4 programmes 'Brass Eye' and 'Jam'. Whilst many spoof shows are of their time, and seem dated out of their context, 'The Day Today' is as hilarious now as it was then. The episodes are regularly repeated on UK Play, although they are unlikely to be broadcast on terrestrial TV again. The plot of the series was to exaggerate certain aspects of the media and news reporting. In particular, the show successfully spoofed the over-intricate graphics of current ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review BONG! Spoof news show funny! (300 words)

The Day to day was a shortlived but memorable spoof news show that ran for six episodes on BBC2 about four years ago.As with a lot of BBC shows it graduated from Radio 4 and sadly it was too good to survive. The programme had a similar format to Newsnight with Christopher Morris playing the Paxmanesque anchorman. The show featured headlines "chimneysweep pumps boss full of mayonaise" and out side broadcasts and reports from the cast dressed up as different characters. My favorites were the CNN style reports from deathrow which usually featured serial killer Chapman Baxter being executed is some exotic manner.Once he was dressed as Elvis on a ...  Read the complete review
