Advantages: Outstanding acting, fantastic depiction of the diary's events.

Disadvantages: Final cliffhanger, though it stays true to the book.

Adapted time and time again, this story never fails to bring a tear to one's eye. Recently adapted by the BBC this story tells the tale of a young Jewish girl, forced into hiding along with her family to save themselves from being carted off to a concentration camp. The story is widely known, and so it might seem difficult to capture the essence of this story - but no, not for the BBC.

The five part series was gripping from start to finish, from the times when the characters were going about their daily business in hiding, to the traumatic and high tension scenes when raids were commenced.

Ellie Kendrick played Anne Frank, and although just so young, managed a compelling performance of a girl whose life has been turned upside down. So sweet and innocence at times, yet so feisty at others. She really captured the essence of the situation and pulled the show together. I think a failure in wrong casting of the lead could have made or broken the show, luckily they got it right.

This series focuses solely on the time before and during hiding. I remember seeing a feature length adaptation that had this and also the time during the concentration camps. Though this is a truly compelling story, it leaves the viewer on an almost cliffhanger of the final raid. Having said this I believe it does the diary justice, because no one really knows what happened during Anne's time at the concentration camp.

If you haven't seen it I'd recommend it to all. I'm not really one for historical drama's but this is too good to miss!

Summary: A five part series detailing the events of Anne Frank and her family both before and during hiding.
