“ Type: Casting Show „
If you, like me, have been suffering from Top Model withdrawing ahead of the Cycle 20 Boys vs. Girls edition, fear not. Oxygen's latest modelling show 'The Face' may just be the cure.
Hosted by ex-Top Model judge Nigel Barker, the show sees top models Naomi Campbell, Coco Rocha and Karolina Kurkova act as coaches. Borrowing aspects from 'The Voice', contestants are picked by the coaches and are in 'teams', but only one girl will be 'The Face' and win a contract with ULTA beauty.
There were a whole array of girls, many of which were apparently carefully selected from thousands of hopefuls but only a few stand-outs for me in the first episode. As it is just the premiere season, it is likely that better girls will apply in future seasons, but as it stands, they have a varied range of girls, some loud, some awkward, some experienced, some not...
The format of the show is that each week the girls take part in a challenge and wins a prize, and then will participate in a campaign which could be a photo shoot, a runway show, a modelling job etc. These are team based, and the team that wins are safe from elimination. The other two coaches must select a girl from their team to be put up to the chopping board and it is up to the coach who won the campaign to decide who stays and who goes.
As it is not just a competition between the girls but also the coaches, there is evidently tactical eliminations and tensions run high between the coaches also.
Each coach offers something different and their combined versatility gives the show a different edge. I personally think Coco is the best judge- she is so animated and funny, but also genuine and real. I feel that Naomi at times is putting on a publicity stunt with her drama. Karolina is a bit in the middle- don't really know what she is doing sometimes.
The annoying thing about the show is the format. There is too much 'recap' and too much 'what's to come' that the editing easily spoils what is going to happen. I was easily able to predict which girl was going to go in episode 2 because of this.
It is somewhat strange to see Nigel host this show given his long attachment to America's Next Top Model, but since being let off, I guess it is good that he is able to jump on board a new, fresh and exciting modelling show, which could be outlast ANTM. And if/when that happens, who will be laughing but Nigel himself?
Obviously, the two shows are different in format, style etc, but ultimately is a modelling show and they will be compared in every way. Whilst 'Make Me A Supermodel' couldn't last beyond 2 seasons, I believe 'The Face' could go a long way if they sort out the formatting a little bit.
Overall, The Face offers an element of surprise and the 'jobs' they do in each episode are more 'real' than ANTM. With 3 top model coaches, lots of drama and good editorials, this has the potential to go a long way.
