Advantages: Hilarious
Disadvantages: It ended :(
The fresh prince of bel air started in 1990 and ran for 6 seasons until 1996. Although it ended 13 years ago now, many channels all over the world still show re runs.
Sent from home in Philadelphia, Will Smith is sent to live with his rich aunt and uncle in Bel Air. Will has been a troublesome teen up to now and his mother hopes sending him away will turn him into a respectable young man. Will is from the hood and because his aunt and uncle's family are rich and very 'proper' they dont always see eye to eye.
Will Smith stars as the character with the same name and also wrote and sung the theme song for the show and appears on his Greatest Hits album. Unlike many shows that change the theme song after a couple of seasons, this one stuck the whole way throughout. Allthough Will is excited to move to Bel Air, things rarely go as he plans. His uncle Phillip has a lot of rules which Will pretty much always disobeys.
Phillip is a bad tempered and very strict man. He's extremely overweight and none of his children have the nerves to say anything out of line in front of him. Will doesnt see things the same way though, he grabs every opportunity to make fun of his uncle.
Phillip's wife Vivian Banks was played by 2 different women with the change over happening after season 3. She always tries to reason with both Phillip and Will but never really gets anywhere.
Phillip and Vivian have 3 children, Hilary, Carlton and Ashley.
Hilary is the dim witted but extremely fashionable older sister. She always relies on the butler, Geoffery to do anything for her. She always takes advantage of her families wealth and thinks she can get anything she wants and normally has her dad wrapped around her little finger.
Carlton is the extremely smart one. He's stuck up and thinks his wealth gives him higher standing than other people he knows. Will and Carlton have a love/ hate relationship but deep down they really care for each other. Carlton is a bit nieve and tends to let Will play practical jokes on him without his knowing. One of the best things about Carlton is that he is a terrible dancer. Quite a few episodes make a point of making out just how bad he is.
Ashley is the youngest of the 3 and was played by Tatyana Ali who had a short lived singing career. Her singing talents also featured in some of the later episodes. I saw Tatyana Ali support Backstreet Boys once and she was actually pretty good. Both her parents tried to protect her and make sure she didnt turn out like other girls her age but Will tends to lead her astray and she becomes more rebellious as she gets older.
Geoffery is the Banks' butler from England. He is probably one of my favourite characters due to his witty and sarcastic one liners. As well as being very faithful to the family, once Will arrives, he starts to rebel as well, hence the sarcastic comments.
One of the things i love about this show is how silly it is. The fresh price was well known for its slapstick comedy. You can watch any episode from any season and not really be lost as to what is going on. Each character worked really well with each other and made a very believable family. I think thats one of the things that makes it so funny, the fact that a family could come so close to something on tv.
This is the show that made Will Smith famous and he is every bit as great as he is now in The fresh prince. Although Smith can play serious role's well, he does comedy even better.
Summary: Another great from the 90's. They dont make them like this anymore

- 06/07/09 I have now had to prove to my husband that I can in fact do the entire theme song/rap from memory. The sad things I remember from the 90s. |
