The Grimleys Reviews

Newest Review: ... is despised by Doug, but that doesn't stop him attempting to win Geraldine from the mysogenist. The Grimleys was first broadcast in a 1997 pilot. James Bradshaw is excellent as the oversized schoolboy; you warm to him, share his frustrations and revel in his triumphs. His father is played by Nigel Planer. He is a bitter, lazy and repugnant individual, who regards Gordon as a waste of space - it sounds so much better in a Birmingham accent. Geraldine was played in the pilot by Samantha Janus, and Doug by Jack Dee. Their performances were amusing and credible. Janus created the sweet-natured essence of Gordon's love interest, while Dee ... more

If you want an idea of what The Grimleys is like, think Gavin and Stacey with Birmingham accents, crossed with The Royle Family. That's what I think anyway, you'll have to make up your own mind. The Grimleys follows Birmingham teenager Gordon Grimley through the pains of adolescence, with all the associated lustful yearnings and frustrations. Split between Gordon's home and school, the series unfolds with the marvelous back drop of the 1970s. In short, the whole premise of The Grimleys, is Gordon's infatuation with his English teacher, Geraldine. She treats him with kindness and patience he gets nowhere else, least of all at home. If you haven`t seen this excellent series yet, then turn off the computer and go and watch it now! It is one of those excellent programmes that after a few episodes, it just keeps on getting better and better. The characters are quite true to life and everyone can see themselves as one of tham - be it the hopeless Gorden or the devilishly handsome (and general cool dude) Mr. Treblecoe. Any program which includes Brian Conley as a sadistic games master, Amanda Holden as his "bird" (English teacher Miss Titley), Noddy Holder as a teacher, Alvin Stardust as a bartender and Lewis Collins as Brian's dad is alright in my book. The program hangs together nicely with the storylines being supported by 70s music and fashions - (I still think Slade are fab, but I'm certain I never dressed that bad!). This is one of the few programmes in our house which is a "do not miss or forget to video on pain of death". The stupidity of it all seems to make some sort of sense. While the music and styles help some of us remember ... Read the complete review

No-one else in our house liked this programme and couldn't understand what I found so funny in it at all. To be honest I don't really know myself, all I do know is I watched it every week without fail. Do you think there was some underlying message in the credits which drugged me into watching week after week or am I just a sad couch potato.Brian it's only a puppet was brilliant as sir and the rest of the cast were good too. It isn't on at the moment and everyone here is hoping it won't be coming back. ... Read the complete review
