Less Sex and the City - More Style in the City.
The Hills are alive with drama, deception and divine fashion!
I have been hooked to this series from the word go, an MTV production, it follows one young girl, Lauren Conrad, and her closest friends as they try to make it in Hollywood.
The Hills is filled to the brim with fabulous LA fashion, dramatic scenes that everyone young girl can relate too, and gorgeous eyecandy to boot!
The Hills follows on from the Laguna Beach series' , so anyone who loved 'LC' in this will LOVE the first series of this fanastic reality show.
The DVD comes with some fabulous sparkly little extras that you didn't get to see on the television series including tours of Lauren's appartment and some great interviews.
For anyone who is into fashion - this is the platinum teen reality series. Not only for the fabulous outfits that the girls wear, but also for the chance at a sneak peak at the life of an intern at one of the most prestigious fashion empires - the Teen Vogue offices.
A must have for anyone who loves a reality series, loves fashion or just loves the mini-celebrity Lauren Conrad.
A girly must have for a rainy afternoon! Go out and grab it!
Aah the Hills. Despite the fact that I'm not very thrilled to watch this, infact find it pretty boring, I actually have all four seasons on DVD. Why?! I have no idea, but there cannot always be tidy explanations for life.
So to briefly sum up, this is an MTV produced 'reality' programme based on the escapades of a handful of rich 20-somethings in sunny LA. The main characters are Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag, Audrina Partridge, Justin bobby, Lo Bosworth, Whitney Port, Spencer+Stephanie Pratt. And a few others. Brody someone? To be honest they all sort of amalgamate into one dull character that I find it hard to differentiate between.
I really don't know why I watch this (yet I do), it's beyond ridiculous and basically lame. Although supposedly a reality programme, it is so obviously set-up and scripted 85% of the time with wooden, awkward performances from the characters. You would imagine that being a big ole phoney set-up this could at least allow for some dramatic occurances or humour but, not so much. I actually can't get over how boring most of it is. Yawnsville to the power of three. For example, one of the main 'plots' (which has somehow managed to have been stretched across all the seasons) is a rift between former bffs Lauren and Heidi, which can be summed up simply by a lot of wounded looks and bambi eyes, and conservations such as:
"It just, like, sucks, y'know?" (excruciating pause)
"I know" (much blinking)
"It's, like, a sucky situation"(more pause, and hurt looks)
"I like, don't know what to do"
"I know, it's totally sad" (blinking, looking, pausing..)
"Yeah I'm like, totally upset right now" (Slightly more rapid blinking)
Then there will be a mammoth musical-interlude bit (despite the fact that each episode is barely 20 minutes, there still manages to be loads of these interlude bits that go on for ever).
The characters range from dull to mind numbing. Audrina is probably the worst, boring and vacuous to the point of wanting to scratch your eyes out just for some relief. I suppose some are vaguely amusing, Spencer for instanse (the evil controlling boyfriend) who has some alarming sociopathic tendencies, it has to be said. Also, the development and growth of his beard/tache is entertainment alone (wtf is up with that?! hello tufty! It's like watching a big foot metamorphasis).
So why in all that is holy do I continue to watch this, and waste my precious pennies? The answer is I do not know. I suppose there is some interest in the fashion and awe at all the Chanel bag action that goes on, and it's nice to see somewhere with perpetual blazing sunshine. Also the scenery shots are good, all beach sunsets and sparkly cityscapes. But still..it's so boring! And yet somehow addictive! What is wrong with me? I scare myself.
So, basically, if you're looking for a gripping drama or some intellectual stimulation then this is not the way to go. Honestly, some of the characters on this come across sooo dim that they seem only vaguely aware that they are alive. It's like junkfood for the brain. You know it's crap, you know it's doing you no good, you know there are a million better things to be watching, and yet you still keep going back for more.
On the surface this appears to be a reality show and the first time I watched it I thought it was however then I discovered that actually it is a scripted show masquerading as a reality show and to be honest it is not very good as either.
The main characters are a group of rich kids living in California an the main one of the group is called Lauren Conrad. The whole show is based around their social lives and so you get to see lots of scenes of them in bars, cafes or restaurants and they are all tanned and good looking.
It is obvious that many of the screens are created and directed by the filming company as some of the conversations are so un-natural and forced, there is a fair bit of bitchy back biting and they seem to manage to make mountains out of loads of molehills.
Personally on the few occasions that I have seen this show I found it to be really boring, I never managed to connect with any of the characters as they are all so vacuous and sometimes hard to tell apart as the girls are mostly blonde oand attractive in that vacant Californian way.
There is nothing about this show that I would recommend unless you are having trouble sleeping then it is just the ticket.
I have watched this a good few times now, either because friends I'm with have been watching it or because I've been trying to figure out everyone's fascination with it, and I can now say that I still don't understand the hype behind this show at all.
***** The Idea *****
This is, in theory, a reality show which follows the love, life and dramas of Lauren Conrad and her friends in California, a bit like The Real World, which used to be on MTV.
Lauren and her friends all seem to have quite a lot of money and are also very big on socialising. In the show we mainly see them out at a bar / restaurant with friends, occasionally at work, sometimes shopping or doing other things, and apart from that they will be at home talking. More than anything, the show seems to be about ridiculous arguments between the different characters which normally stem from something as petty as a look that someone has given them, or someone saying they will go out that night and then deciding not to.
***** Scripted??? *****
The show is clearly very heavily scripted so I think it falls somewhere between a reality show and a fictional drama. MTV will never come out and say that it's scripted, but this is what everyone thinks. The impression I get, is that the characters are probably told roughly where to go, what to do, and what to talk about but they aren't reading off an actual script so parts of what they say and do is genuine. For example it will show two of the girls having an argument about something, and I would imagine that MTV had told them to talk to each other about how they felt about that specific subject and probably even hinted that they should have a bit of an argument about it. It's hard to tell exactly how scripted it is.
***** Verdict *****
While many people seem to have got really into watching this, often partly to laugh at the characters stupidity and their ridiculous lives, I just find it boring. The thing about The Hills is that nothing ever really happens. There are a lot of silences and sometimes a whole episode will be about something really mundane, such as a character wondering if they should tell another character that someone has told them they're annoyed at them. It will then show them debating this with all the different characters in the show, and the likelihood is that the show might conclude with them just deciding not to say anything after all. So when I say nothing seems to happen, I'm not exaggerating. Ok so sometimes there will be a mediocre-size argument, that's about as much drama as you get in the show.
***** The Characters *****
To be fair, although it may sound harsh, the characters don't exactly come across as the brightest sparks. With all of them (possibly slightly less with Lauren, and possibly slightly more with Audrina and Whitney) it seems to be a case of 'the lights are on but no-one's home'. Of course I don't know them and I might be totally wrong, but this is how they come across in the show. I don't have a problem with people that are dizzy, but they just don't really seem to have anything to say for themselves. To add to that, they are normally busy talking about each other behind their backs or betraying each other in some way or another.
Overall, I found it interesting to watch a few times to see what the hype was all about, but can now happily conclude that when it's on tv I will avoid it!
I usually dont like reality TV and I'm not that big of a soap addict except for Hollyoaks. However, my sisters were raving about the Hills and so I watched a couple of episodes on E4 and I was hooked.
The Hills is a spin off from another similar program Laguna Beach. It follows a group of priviledged young adults starting off their careers in Hollywood.
The program is cross between a soap and a reality TV show. The events are meant to be real and not staged however this is a debatable as the lighting and the camera angles and sometimes even the dialogue appears staged.
Despite this the program is very easy to watch and you get dragged into their drama filled lives wanting to know whats gonna happen and who said what behind who's back.
The program often repeats on E4 and on TMF and each epsiode lasts about 30 minutes. You dont need to keep on top with the story line and they usually have a quick update at the beginning.
I am a huge fan of the hills, but will try to be unbiased when writing this review. Simply putThe Hills is a light entertainmnet reality tv programme not to be taken too seriously! People doubt the reality part as there maybe scenes which are scripted in the show, however putting this aside it really is a brilliant programme! You get the chance to escape from your own lives for 30mins and enter the world of young american rich kids. Lauren Conrad who was the main character in the show (she has now left) is a huge celebrity in America and is also an excellent role model for young girls. She had romance problems, friendship problems and work problems thoughout all of the series but still managed to keep her dignity. The other characters in the show are all of high entertainment value, even Spencer whethere you love him or, like me, hate him! he is hugely entertaining to watch. The Hills has been running for around 5 series now, following the huge success of Laguna Beach. However as Lauren has just left the show she has been taken over by Kristen Cavallari (from Laguna Beach), so only time will tell whether this show will be able to remain as good as it was with the departure of Lauren. I love watching this programme, whether its scripted or not, my advice, give it a go, love it or hate it i think you will still want to watch it!
The Hills is the spin-off show from MTVs Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County which in itself was a reality TV show response to the success of fictional drama The OC. Laguna Beach was laid out as a fly-on-the-wall documentary following financially privileged American high school teenagers living in the Orange County area of California.
The Hills follows Lauren Conrad (nicknamed LC) an alumni from 'Laguna' as she moves to Los Angeles to pursue a career in fashion, studying at fashion college, whilst working at an intern at Teen Vogue. She lives with best friend Heidi, who soon drops out of college to work for an events organisation company. Other friends of LC include Audrina, a record company receptionist and Whitney a fellow intern. Later in the series', Lo from 'Laguna' makes a reappearance.
Essentially throughout the series which have currently been shown in the UK, the show follows the romantic and professional trials and tribulations of these young women. Somewhere around the second series however, things take a right turn as Heidi gets romantically involved with Spencer Pratt who systematically sets out to destroy Heidi and LCs relationship. The consequences of this send shockwaves through the extended friendship group, and lead to malicious rumours and LC cutting all ties with Heidi. However, as their lives move in different directions, situations and people keep pulling them back into parallels, much to Spencer's disgust.
I'll come right out and say that, against my better instincts, I love this programme - it's light, relatively tense but has some interesting observations. Without wanting to overstate it, I can't think of anything else that I have seen that truly shows the nature and fickleness of friendships, and in spite of all the nastiness and back biting LC are a really good role model, and a rare thing - a reality star with real integrity and seemingly a really nice person.
That is not to say that there isn't the fair share of complicated romantic entanglements, because there certainly are. At the centre of this is Audrina's relationship with Justin 'Bobby' which epitomises on-off. And not to mention the bizarre relationship between Heidi and Spencer (the ultimate pantomime villain.)
On the face of it, the show is pretty shallow admittedly. It is full of rich kids in swanky bars, swanky restaurants, swanky penthouse suites and swanky resorts which appear to have a restriction on admitting anyone below a certain scale of attractiveness. Its appeal is pure escapism obviously. There is some emphasis on their work lives, but it is often presented as glamorous even when they are supposed to be doing mundane tasks like sorting clothes for fashion shows.
More than any other reality show, it is difficult to work out where the reality ends and scripted drama may begin. The producers have denied that anything is posed and it is all natural. A part of this is believable in that not all of the action is actually captured on camera and has to be relayed in conversation. However, the people in the programme are huge celebrities now in the US (Spencer and Heidi have even been 'blessed' with their own name amalgamation - 'Speidi') and this isn't even alluded to in the programme - it is meant to be assumed that they are still holding down jobs, albeit going home at night to their posh apartments. Also Heidi has undergone a massive makeover including admitting to a copious amount of plastic surgery to the point where she is almost unrecognisable from the person that she started off as at the start of Series One
The editing at the end of the scenes once the dialogue has stopped is slightly odd and clunky and it's difficult to tell if the facial expressions shown are reflective of what has really happened or whether they are just ones edited in from parts earlier in the scene.
I'm not going to pretend that this programme has any more cultural value than a Heat magazine, but heck, it's an enjoyable enough way to pass the time.
The Hills follows Lauren Conrad (formally nicknamed LC) from Laguna Beach: The Real OC as she travels to Los Angeles to for school and a new life.
Lauren is joined by new best friends Heidi Montag, Audrina Patridge & Whitney Port for drama over boys, school, work, parties and trying to fit it all together.
Lauren is studying at The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) during the show and this is where she met Heidi. Lauren then met Audrina when she and Heidi moved into their new apartment. Then when she lands her internship at Teen Vogue Lauren meets Whitney, who often offers great advice and a shoulder to cry on.
Over the seasons the girls are joined by more full time cast members Brody Jenner, Spencer Pratt and his sister Stephanie Pratt and also Laurens long time best friend Lauren Bosworth, known as LO.
The show is definately one I like to watch, although now Lauren is finished filming and has been replaced with Kristen Cavallari I don't know if I will continue to watch.
I really love this show despite the fact its clearly not reality. At first I was conned into thinking that these these young girls(Lauren, Heidi, Audrina and Whitney) may actually live the lives they portray on t.v but then after much thinking it became clear.... they dont!
I then realised how impossible it would be for girls of their age to have got even an interview let alone actually working in their fantastic jobs (Im around the same age and would know!) they always have endless money, designer clothes and seem to eat out about 5 times a day.
Lauren must be on the best apprenticship salary going to afford everything!
Lauren and Heidi who no longer speak seem to always 'bump ' into each other, when in real life you wouldn't see someone you hate nearly everyday! However,I do think this show is a brilliant show because of all the drama and I am still drawn like a moth to a flame!
I love the Hills even though it most properly is fake, There apparently have been rumours that Lady Ga Ga is taking Lauren Conrads place in the next series? Like i said thought they are just rumours.
The Hills Season 1
The Hills is a reality based drama set in Hollywood, and is a spin off from the popular MTV Series Laguna Beach with followed a group of teenagers who lived in Laguna Beach in Orange County California.
The Hills focuses upon one of Laguna Beaches main Characters (Lauren Conrad - LC) and follows her transition to living in Los Angeles.
Lauren's life in La commences with her first year at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Lauren shares an apartment with her friend Heidi Montag who hails from Colorado and who was not in the original Laguna Beach series.
The Reality series aims to follow Lauren on a daily basis and present the viewer with a documentary style view of Lauren's world
Lauren Conrad - The Central Character
Heidi Montag - Lauren's best friend from Colarado who is also enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Heidi left FIDM and landed a job at PR Firm Bolthouse. Heidi is initially portrayed as a wannabe party girl with aspirations of becoming a firm fixture on the LA Party Scene.
Audrina Partridge - Audrina hails from Yorba Linda in Orange County and harbors desires to become an actress, Audrina works as a receptionist at Quixote Studios and is a friend of Lauren and Heidi's. Audrina is portrayed as an edgier alternative to the typical LA party girl and appears to be the quieter member of the Reality Series, although this may be due to the fact that in Series 1 Audrina is not yet an established Character.
Whitney Port - Whitney was raised in Los Angeles and is introduced to the series when she commences an internship at Teen Vogue with Lauren Conrad, Whitney previously interned over the summer at Woman's Wear Daily magazine. Whitney is portrayed as committed to her career yet also an affable person and provides a good dynamic within the group.
Series 1 is an introduction to the above characters and Laurens transition to LA.
The Hills is essentially a reality show, although to what level the term Reality Show could be applied is debatable as some of the scenes do appear to be staged or a bit too coincidental.
The series is easy viewing and the backdrop of LA Sunshine, scenery and a glimpse into the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and the other characters workplaces helps to maintain the viewer's interest when the storyline veers towards boredom.
I think it's the dynamic between the characters that kept me watching and how they steer their way through friendships, clothes, girly spats and the arrival of male characters in the form of boyfriends. I did find myself embroiled in the mini dramas and the subsequent outcomes and the impact the characters choices had upon one -another.
The element of voyeurism combined with observing how affluent teenagers living in a gorgeous hot climate somewhere far removed from Good Old Blighty live their lives may be what initially interested me in The Hills. Or perhaps its part of being a product of the 80's and watching The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and all the other Teen movies which made me desperately wish to be a teenager living in America.
I honestly can't define what it is about The Hills that piqued my interest, but I do find that for curling up on the sofa and watching something which is essentially easy viewing The Hills hits the spot. The dynamic between the characters strikes a good and even balance with each character being different enough that a viewer could identify with at least something within one of them. And due to the nature of the series, being Reality TV or at least close to being Reality TV, there is that element of surprise that you wouldn't normally be expecting if this was a wholly manufactured Prime time American TV Show such as Dawson's Creek for example. The Hills and the Characters exercise their free will when it comes to making and breaking friendships, career choices and men.
The Hills is entertaining viewing although it may appeal more to a female audience than a male one.
The day The Hills first premiered, it followed the season 2 finale of Laguna Beach, and viewer ship stayed relatively the same between the programs. Ratings were high for MTV and one of the highest for any cable network. There was a ratings dip after the season 2 finale as viewers reacted poorly to the developing story. From then on, viewership remained relatively steady. Ratings for the premiere of season four were down 9% among the 12-to-34 demographic (2.1 million) and down 5% among total viewers (3.5 million) in comparison to the show's third season premiere. Additionally, the total season 4 average was down 25% from that of season 3. "When season 5 premiered on April 6th 2009, both back to back episodes averaged 3 million viewers, which is lower than the season 4 premiere had last year."

The Hills is a must watch for teen girls and young women in their 20s. However, I have found out that the majority of men seem to hate this programme - with a passion.
The TV show is supposed to be real - it very much is not. If you check out wikipedia and various other sites you will that the show is almost entirely fake. This is most obvious now that the cast are all celebrities with their own clothing lines, music etc - all of which fails to ever be mentioned in the programme.
The show picks up from when Lauren left Laguna Beach (another fab TV series) to head for FIDM in LA. She moves in with her friend Heidi Montag (who featured in 1 episode of Laguna) and gets a job at Teen Vogue where she meets Whitney (who now has her own spin off - The City). The girls also make friends, supposedly randomly with Audrina Partridge (who has admitted she was cast as their LA friend).
We are now on season 5. Lauren and Heidi are no longer friends - largely due to a rumour allegedly spread by Heidi's (now husband) Spencer Pratt - the baddie of the series. Lauren now lives with Lo (another ex-Laguna alumni) and works at People's Revolution with Spencer's sister - Stephanie.
Although the series is completely fake it is still compelling TV. Every girl I know watches it and wishes their life was like that!!
The hills is an american drama series which follows the lives of Lauren Condrad, Heidi Montag, Audrina Partridge and Whitney Port. Lauren Conrad originally took part in a reality tv show on mtv caled The Real Life OC: Laguna Beach. This followed the lives of teenagers through there final few years at school. When they finished school and the summer came to an end the cameras then followed Lauren Conrad and her new life in Hollywood. It showed her internship at Teen Vogue where she met Whitney, her relationships and heartbreak with a boy called Jason, who originally starred in the real OC and her loss of a best friend.
Theres always drama in the Hills and there have been many questions as to how real it really is, although it doesnt stop it from being a great show, set up or not. We can see the different industries that Lauren, Audrina Heidi and Whitney take part in and how they party.
The show is very addicting. This is partly due to the good storylines and the way that as a viewer you are enticed and feel that because you get to know the characters so well, they are actually telling you the story themselves and they are with you every split second that the programme is on.
There have already been 4 series which shows all this drama and last night the last series began. It already portrayed alot of drama and the constant preview clips on mtv is showing a great season of television.
Following on from the hills was a spin off programme which this time follows Whitney as she leaves the hills to make a new life in New york. This was also a great series and finished just last week.
Both these programmes are well worth watching and if you havent watched them you can go on to www.mtv.co.uk/thehills and watch all the episodes from all the seasons.
Great programme for female teenagers and people in there twenties although i think women of all ages would love this as it is basically a programme that involves being nosey on another persons life. I also know quite a few boys that watch this programme (although they say its just because of the "fit girls" as they put it, although they all are extremly pretty)
The hills is an american drama series which is meant to reveal the real life actions of Lauren Condrad, Heidi Montag, Audrina Partridge and Whitney Port. The show came about from a spin off The real life OC:Laguna Beach which told the story of Lauren and her friends. Now she has moved to Hollywood and is about to lead a new type of life.
Although im not sure how set up the action is in this programme, its still an intriguing and interesting insight into the life of the rich in Hollywood. Whitney and Lauren work in fashion and it can be inspiring for those who wants to get into that type of industry. The programme shows their battle of friendship, boyfriends, work and love and how complicated life can just be. Its not always that simple being rich.
When watching the programme you feel as if you know the cast and can relate to many of the situation there going through.
I definatly recommend this to female teenagers and young twenties!
For those of you who don't know this is a series (supposedly documentary) following the life of Lauren Conrad a young, beautiful and extremely rich girl (you may have seen her in Laguna Beach) who has moved to live in Beverley Hills where she now works at Teen Vogue doing a intership. The series follows her and her friends the main ones being Heidi, audrina, Whitney and the relationships and dramas they all have, and believe me they all have loads!
I came across this after being addicted to Laguna Beach and was happy to see they had decided to carry on following Lauren. Although most of the time you sit there watching and wondering what any of these girls and boys can be complaining about...there beautiful you wont see one ugly person in this and rich.
Through the series you find out that the main dramas this girls have is to do with their boyfriends and friendships as they always seem to dislike each others partners! They follow them at work although this seems to be less about the work they do and more about watching them gossip about what they have been upto.
involving work and boyfriends as well as life in Beverly Hills and the party scene.
It's a show more aimed at girls I would say as it tends to look at fashion and the relationship girls have with friends (although that said my boyfriend will watch it although I think this has something to do with the attractive girls walking around in their bikinis!)
Who will like this series:
Fans of the OC will love this as the main Charector Lauren Conrad, is actually from the real Orange County, Laguna Beach to be exact- she lives drama everyday im her most fabulous of lives.
Lauren Condrad, Heidi Montag, as well as loads more.
About this series:
Okay, the Hills is a spin off from the show Laguna Beach and follows the trials and tribulations faced everyday by glamourista Lauren Conrad. She Moves to Beverlly Hills with her best friend Heidi as they both start fashion school together. Soon Lauren gets offered an internship with Teen Vogue and so embarks on the start of her fashion career. The series follows the girls and their friends, through tough descion involving work and boyfriends as well as life in Beverlly Hills and the party scene.
I came across The Hills on MTV and was immeadiatly hooked. I loved the drama, Llifestyle and clothes. Okay i was jealous, deeply these girls seem to have it all and still cant deal with life. That aside the series is a fun look at the fashion industry and party scene in Beverlly Hills and provides you with laughs, cringe worthy moments (Whitneys modelling debut anyone?), and teary moments. This programme is fluffy reality tv it wont change your life but is a good watch that will make you decide to dress better everyday for work, if anything.
