Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Too many to mention.
I have watched this programme on a few occasions but it isn't my kind of viewing. It is hosted by Jeremy Kyle (obviously) and is set in a studio. Jeremy Kyle who started life off a Life Insurance Salesman, has also been a radio presenter before moving onto TV in 2005. If I remember rightly this was after Trisha left the ITV channel.
The programme itself is set in a studio in Manchester and anybody who is over 18 years of age can request a free ticket to be in the audience. Jeremy's show always starts off with him walking around the studio shaking hands with the audience and introducing his guests.
The programme is designed to confront families or friends who are at odds with one another. This could be down to a lot of reasons. However many families who 'star' on the show have fallen out over violence, drugs, alcohol, affairs etc. It gives you the idea of the depths of despair some of these individuals have found themselves in. Jeremy then asks both sides there own version of the story, and then acts as judge and jury telling those he believes are wrong 'to get their act together'. In the meantime the audience are clapping and oohing and arghing. He also carries out lie detecting tests and DNA tests and gives the results out on air. For those who want help after the show he offers counselling. Exactly how much counselling they get and how much the show helps them off air I don't know.
Personally I find allowing vulnerable families and individuals on the show, to air their problems, very distasteful. There are many organisations out there who will help without embarrassing them on day time television. I know the argument may come back that it is their choice to appear on tv. However many of these contestants are a 'penny short of a shilling' or very young. These programmes can only come back to haunt them in later life.
I guess that the show is relatively cheap to produce. They encourage phone calls throughout the show, at a cost of 25p for people in similar positions to contact the show. This alone must net them many thousands of pounds a day.
I don't like the programme. I don't like the way people air their problems in public. But for it to still be on the air many people must enjoy it!!
Summary: A show with it all- Lies, Affairs, Drugs, Sex - but not for me!!

- 01/04/09 Great review, though it would be better if you gave an example of one of the episodes. |
