Advantages: Some people get their moment of fame
Disadvantages: How does it affect the children of the contestants?
I must confess to watching the Jeremy Kyle show from time to time when I am feeling a bit masochistic. Of all the shows of this format, and there are many, it is the most savage to it's guests, and that's just the presenter!
I have a theory about people who go on these shows. I believe that their lives are so boring that they sit at home and make up some of the most outlandish stories about their own lives just to get on the show. If the story is not scandalous enough and they do not qualify for the show as we have heard it all before.
Why do I think this? What could induce any half ways sane person to subject themselves to an unwinnable verbal punch up with Jeremy Kyle? If anyone had really done the things they admit to on the show, they'd never air them for the whole nation to hear about! It's just a theory.
I also wonder about the effect that this, and shows like this, have on the numerous innocent children of dubious parentage identified on the show. You can just imagine little Johnny turning up at school on Monday morning to snide remarks of I saw your mum on Jeremy Kyle, who's your dad then?
Or worse still repeating remarks made by the fathers of the children before the paternity test results prove they ARE the father.
It is the modern format for the gladiatorial games. There is only one survivor - the reigning champion Jeremy Kyle. Until a challenger comes along and knocks him off his perch...
Summary: A modern and socially acceptable blood sport
