The MentalistNewest Review: ... quite serious and dramatic, there are also a lot of "laugh out loud" moments with The Mentalist. Jane has a lot of funny lines and that cheesy bright-white-teeth grin is enough to make you laugh in itself! Jane can make people quite uncomfortable with his mind-reading-like abilities and he uses that to his advantage in order to find the perps - sometimes in quite an amusing ... more |

The Mentalist is another excellent new drama from the US, featuring Australian-born Simon Baker as the lead character, Patrick Jane. The background to the series is that Patrick Jane *used* to be a fake psychic, using his mentalist skills. Now, after the murder of his wife and child by a serial killer known as Red John, he has decided to use his mentalist abilities for good and is working with the police to help solve crimes. Whilst the subject matter is often quite serious and dramatic, there are also a lot of "laugh out loud" moments with The Mentalist. Jane has a lot of funny lines and that cheesy bright-white-teeth grin is enough to ... Read the complete review

A new program from the yanks, a creation of one of the best US crime drama companies, CBS. I watched this from the beginning, seeing an advert on Channel Five. Basically it follows an ex 'mind-reader' whose child and mother were murdered by a serial killer named Red John. Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) now works for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) providing a different eye on the evidence, the victims and the scene. He sees more than others and this is the reason he was so good at 'reading minds' and acting as a channel for the dead etc... So what makes it so good? Well it is less serious than the usual crime dramas like CSI and Law ... Read the complete review

Having started to feel jaded by the classic crime dramas - much as I love them - I found this refreshing and more worriedly almost laugh out loud entertaining (given the subject I am slightly worried by the impact on my own mental state). For people that have heard nothing of this (surprising - Five and their digi station Five US have gone in to stratespheric promotion mode (even doing an evening screening of star Simon Bakers old series - The Guardian - any way I deviate...), Patrick Jayne is an advisor to the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation), who seems to operate and solves crimes by delving in to people's minds and definitely avoiding Bureau ... The Mentalist is one of the many American TV shows that I watch, and I knew many months ago when it was on in America, that it was only a matter of time till a UK show bought it. With channel 5 having originally started showing Prison Break and House, it was no suprise to see them also go for The Mentalist as well. I would desrive this show as a mix between Dexter and Physc. Basically it is about Patrick Jane. He works for a detective group as an advisor and uses his mentalist tactics to figure out who commited the crimes. Beneath it all however is a very perplexing character, as we found out his wife and kid were called by a mysterious Red John and that five ... Read the complete review

I was pleasantly surprised to see from another reviewer here on dooyoo that 'the Mentalist' is apparently 'taking American TV by storm', because although I like the series a lot I feared that it wasn't getting......gee-whiz- gosh-critically-acclaimed enough to warrant a second series of the show being made, and that would've been a darn shame. 'The Mentalist' is a pleasantly diverting TV crime drama, currently airing on Channel 5 at 9pm on Thursdays, although happily if you forget it's on - and I'm afraid to say this quite often happens with me as Channel 5 is something I usually skip past or forget about because it rarely shows anything I want to see - it ...
