Advantages: Inciteful reports, funny moments, likeable guests/ presenters
Disadvantages: Sometimes slow, some reports won't appeal to many people
The One Show is a programme aired weekdays at 7pm on BBC1. It is also available of BBC iplayer soon after the show finishes in case you miss it. It is set-up with a sort of mismash of reports and features which I quite enjoy. It trys to accomodate a large array of tastes and people and it pulls this off well. Other shows try to do this and they sacrifice substance and interest but The One Show has reports well worth watching and you can learn a lot from them. They tend to focus around topical issues such as the economy but they take issues like this in a light hearted manner so it's not too heavy going for 7pm on a weeknight when you just want to relax after work, school, university, etc.
It is presented by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley who make a good pairing for a show like this. They don't take themselves seriously, they have a laugh but they can also carry out more serious interviews and stories too, so they are quite versatile presenters. What I like about these two is how real they seem as people, gone are the stereotypical BBC accents, here Chiles has his Brummie accent and Christine has her Northern Irish accent (apologies for generilisation) and it's refreshing to here these accents among the usual fairly boring BBC accents that usually dominate the channel. They work together very well and oyu can tell they enjoy their work, with a smile on their face it makes for light hearted viewing. Christine in particular is an extremely likeable person who is intelligent and funny and seems down to earth.
They always have a guest on the show, the vast majority of the time they are plugging something such as a show, book, CD, etc but not too much time is devoted to this which I like. There isn't much time in the half-hour slot this show is aired to carry out a full interview with the guest so personally I understand the need to plug whatever they are doing. There is time for a chat of some description and the quality of this largely depends on guest themselves. Some guests are fairly dull but some of them offer inciteful ancedotes and witty comments which add to the show greatly. Sometimes they have music played at the end of the show by a guest, which is a nice touch sometimes and adds variation to an already flexible programme.
That's the great thing with The One Show, it's never the same each day, they always talk about different things or if there is a topic for the week, they keep it different enough to be interesting. They often deal with frankly silly subjects, which is fine once in a while as they keep it light hearted and don't take themselves seriously by making jokes about themselves, which I find amusing. They have different people who deliver regular reports on these subjects such as Dom Littlewood, Phil Tufnell and Christine Walkden who usually stay around their specialist subjects. For example Christine Walkden does nature type things and Dom Littlewood does consumer problems and issues. These reports last for around 5-10 minutes and they are often funny and inciteful. As The One Show trys to cater for many different people, there will be undoubtedly some areas that you and indeed I don't find interesting but they try and add their humour to it and get some incite from a variety of people to try and keep it appealing to many. It works most of the time.
The One Show is a good way to kick off the evenings television in a light-heated fashion. Not for everybody but it will appeal to many too.
Summary: A light-hearted show with likeable people on screen
