Advantages: Entertaining
Disadvantages: No Nadine
Being a huge big Girls Aloud fan over the years, i enjoyed watching it. At times it was cringeworthy, at times i had goosebumps and at times i was laughing at how bad the girls where. But all in all i was impressed, with how Sarah, Nicola, Cheryl and Kimberely are totally committed to fulfilling their goal and how they don't give up. I think it speaks numbers also on why they are successfull and why truly they have made it in this industry and that indvidually they can carry a show. I think they chose well and they all have very different ideas of passions.
The idea of the show is to allow them to fulfill their passion, a passion for something. For me, my passion would be being a postman for a day or teaching for example. For these girls it's completely different things. Now there are four episodes - one for each member.
Nadine Coyle, backed out of this at last minute although originally her passion was to be a opera conductor but for some reason it didnt work out. She said on This Morning that she did not have a passion, and her passion was being a singer and she already had that. But i believe their was some backstage problem and she's therefore not in. Also you'll notice despite Nadine turning up for the other members at several places to support them she is completely ignored by the editing and camera people, as far as they are concerned she does not exist. So, thats interesting...
It was shown in Feb 2008 on ITV 2, was watched on average by 200k-400k peeps every week not counting repeats and did quite well. A DVD release followed which also did quite well. Although alot of fans have complained that the quality and editing was poor.
Cheryl works with Will.I.am to be a street dancer and audition for him. She gets it and gets to be on the record and video. Heartbreaker the song did quite well in the UK. I dont think it would have done without her. Did quite well for her, and showed that she could do things without the band. Sarah is mad so she wanted to do horse riding, makes sense LOL! it's a out there choice. Kimberely no suprise likes musicals, she stars in a west end music and does a huge solo. She proved me wrong - i said she was a bad singer, turns out she can sing with range and with emotion. Nicola is very pale in real life, so she used this opportunity to her advantage and got it to launch off a skin care range, a real range that you can buy - it's called Danity Doll and it's done quite well too.
It seems anything Girls Aloud touch turns out to be a glowing success quite weird, but these episodes where all quite well shot. I think they also showed just how close the girls are, and how despite all the split rumors their friendship and unity seems real. My fave episode was Cheryl's as i saw her as someone who works hard and i thought she was a lazy sod before LOL!! maybe its because it was the first episode. Nicolas episode was interesting the most, as she was quite uncomfortable and controlling during the whole thing. Kimberely's was impressive as she proved me wrong. I didnt like Sarah's too much because of the horses, but she came off well out of it anyway.
I think this is getting repeated somewhere, so i'd encourage you to either catch the repeat, buy one of the DVDs floating around ebay or buy the original release. A great series and it shows the passions and determinations of these girls in completing a set goal. They all came off well and it's good for the group as well as it promotes their music. I enjoy watching it. I thought it might be a boring reality show but it wasn't it was interesting, it was like watching people work and they really didnt give up despite lots of knocks. At the end of it, you'll think you know these girls quite well.
Summary: ITV series of Girls Aloud one year ago, it's out on DVD too.
