Disadvantages: more chat than action
The 'Premiership' replaced the legendary Match of the Day. ITV had paid a lot for the rights and everyone was looking forward to how they would perform. To be fair to them they had to follow an excellent show ‘Match of the Day’ was an excellent football highlights programme with the right combination of talk and action. So, as all the family sat down to watch the 7pm Premiership highlight programme we were quite excited. Des Lynam was back presenting and with co-analysts Terry Venables and Ally MCoist it seemed a good line up although it was sad not to see Alan Hansen there. After watching the programme, we were all very disappointed. Were was all the action we were left asking, it seemed asif there were more breaks than football action. Everything seemed to be talk and no action, chat from the presenters, chat from the managers and very little football. There seemed to be no main action. Yes, some of the camera work was impressive and the analysis good but we wanted more action. At this point we were all wishing the BBC had ‘Match of the Day’ atleast we would see 50+ minutes of actions compared to the 25 minutes we got from ITV. However, to ITV’s credit this week’s programme was much better, less talk and more football. Just like we like it. I know it will take time for ITV to get everything in Tune but they are improving and I am sure if they carry on improving they will be just as good as the BBC’s ‘Match of the Day’. A mention for the song from U2 is really good. I can see myself getting used to it. ITV should be applauded because they edit the football really quicker and much faster than the BBC so they do a really good job. The fact that the programme comes on much earlier is something to get used to but it’s good for children and it means you can watch football before you go out. Overall the show is improving and I am sure it wi
ll continue to do so. They have a good team of analysts and the format will improve. We’ll be able too judge it more effectively in a couple of months

- 05/09/01 In fairness, I think the later start on the BBC was due to scheduling, not editing time. You're right though, ITV are worse but should be getting better. |
