Created for the Fox TV network by Matt Groening The Simpsons is perhaps now the most popular cartoon ever. It was first screened on The Tracy Ullman show in the USA on April the 19th 1987. In the early days the character had not yet been truly defined and the artwork was a bit sketchy in places. It was the humour and the fantastic characters, which was to make the Simpsons a phenomenon. On Dec 7th 1989 The Simpsons first 30 minute episode was screened, from then on in they became bigger and bigger.
Well over 420 episodes later this dysfunctional family have had several adventures made countless children and adults happy and look like they could go on forever. In 2007 The Simpsons Movie was released to great anticipation, for me it was not quite as good as the small screen antics. They are now into their 20th season, and thanks to the return of Sky1 to the Virgin Media network I can once again enjoy their escapades on a Sunday night. They are screened at other times but it is Sunday when the new episodes are screened.
So who are the Simpsons, they are a middle class American family who have all the same problems and difficulties we all have. Theirs just turn out more outlandish and more hilarious than our normal mediocre lives. There are four of them, starting with Homer Simpson the father figure who never quite manages to be the father figure. He is always looking for that elusive scheme which will make him rich without him actually having to work for it. It is for eating however that Homer is most famous and in particular for eating doughnuts. He adores them and frequently drifts of into a dream about them. His advice to his offspring borders on the ridiculous, especially that given to Bart his son. One minute he'll stand and preach a sermon only to do the complete opposite on finishing his sermon.
Homer is married to Marge and there is no doubt that there is a strong love between them, however in all his efforts to prove this homer always screws up, in fact Homer pretty much screws up in everything he does. They also have two daughters Lisa and Maggie, Maggie is not yet toddler whilst Lisa is the brains of the family and a mere 7 years old easily outstrips Homer I the intelligence department.
The script writing for the Simpsons is noting short of brilliant, the laughs are a plenty and there are even several touching and sad moments. At the start there was usually a kind of moral to the episodes but after 420 odd episodes as you can imagine they have run out on that score. There is always a kind of right and wrong thing going on and you are left wondering just how things will pan out. The funniest thing about Homer is that most men at lest can see a bit of themselves in him. He creates DIY monstrosities believing them to be works of art.
If the series were just the Simpsons it would have finished ages ago but there are now so many intermingling characters that you can't predict anything. Every character has there own sense of superiority and they all work extremely well together. There are many as with Homer that you can relate too and it is probably this relationship that has been the main success behind The Simpsons. It's quite simply the best cartoon series ever and there have been some real gems to compete with. You can quite easily find your self drawn into the series and getting really caught up in it, Most of the characters seem so real. If you haven't yet seen an episode................what planet have you been on. Come back to Earth and get yourself a right old laugh.
Summary: A brilliant cartoon parody of middle class America
