Advantages: Great show

Disadvantages: None really

The Smurfs was a magical cartoon that first aired in the 1970s and featured small blue people with white hats as they went about their adventures, introducing us to the different characters and giving us a number of wonderful episodes.

The Smurfs were first created in the 1950s by a Belgian cartoonist. It was spotted by and American who bought the rights and launched the TV series in 1976. By 1977, The Smurf song had hit the top of the charts, and The Smurfs were well and truly in our lives.

The Smurfs lived in a forest, and were led by Papa Smurf, who wore a red hat to indicate his seniority. They were roughly three apples high (!) and were hunted by the evil wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael. The squeaky voiced Smurfs were constantly be on the run from the pair's trickery, as Papa Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Smurfette, Greedy Smurf and co survived from day to day, seemingly in ignorant bliss until Gargamel appeared with another of his dastardly plots!

I highly enjoyed the Smurfs. If they are shown today, I confess I cannot find them on TV. I know they reran some of the episodes a few years ago, and I enjoyed them as much as the reruns I watched as a kid in the late 1980s, and I know my son would enjoy it. The cartoon has remained popular throughout the years, with references regularly made and Smurf costumes being regularly worn at fancy dress parties. If you do manage to see teh Smurfs on TV, give your kids a run at it. IT's highly entertaining and well worth a look.

Summary: Great kids' show from the 1970s and 1980s

I loved the smurfs! Even collected the little figures (and probably still have them somewhere!)
