Advantages: Fern and Phil likeable, wide range of topics
Disadvantages: Ad breaks, dtupid competition
This Morning is a long-running popular magazine show aired on British television on ITV. It started in 1988 and was presented by Richard Madely and Judy Finnigan until 2001. When they left there were a few other short lived presenting teams until they came up with the winning formula of Fern Britton and Philip Schofield. Currently the dou present Monday to Thursday and then on Fridays and over the summer holidays the show is presented by husband and wife team Eamon Holmes and Ruth Langsford. The show runs for two hours from 10.30-12.30 though it takes a break for a little news update part-way through.
The show really does cover a wide range of topics from cookery, reviews of the latest films, celebrity gossip, household tips, discussions over hot news topics, human interest stories, health problems, special seasonal pieces, fashion and makeup advice, the best television programs and much more. No two days are the same and they do try and keep the programme relevant to what's currently going on. Though some of it is much more serious such as the interview with the parents whose daughter was run over and were campaigning for more speed cameras much of it is light-hearted and mundane such as the section about male beauty products when they had volunteers test out the new man-scara and guy-liner. The show seems to strike a happy balance between the two and the hosts always seem respectful of the tone of the piece although when the more fun items come up Fern and Phil are known to sometimes get the giggles and not so long ago were in the paper because someone complained about them being childish.
I really enjoy the topics covered by This Morning especially the pieces where they take catwalk or desginer outfits and put together something similar that you can buy from the high street as they appreciate that not everyone has that kind of money. Some of their pieces are also quite informative and you can end up learning a fair bit about something you were completely unaware of. I do like the presenting teams though sometimes when I am watching when Ruth and Eamon are on they can be a bit overly coupley and can over-share about their personal life and I have head Eamono being called arrogant by some in the press though I can't say I'd noticed that.
One of my biggest annoyances with This Morning is the amount of content compared to airtime. It normally takes them about eight minutes to give you a summary of what's coming up on the show at the beginning, they often preview what's coming up after the break only five minutes after telling us and I find the ad breaks too frequent and numerous. The most annoying thing though is the competition they keep pushing throughout the show over and over. I just feel too much time is wasted.
Overall though I find this an enjoyable show which covers a good range of topics. It certainly isn't high-brow but it's good relaxing TV or something to have on in the background.
Summary: A vast improvement on the Jeremy Kyle show that precedes it
