Advantages: genre, 1970's, gadgets

Disadvantages: special features are not visual

I'm going to write about a programme I have recently discovered, 'The Tomorrow People' a science fiction programme of the 1970's. I first heard of it on Top Ten sci-fi and it was mentioned that it was similar to 'Dr Who' so I had to give it a try, and have discovered that apart from the same genre there is not much other similarity, however it is still good in it's own right. I would not be suprised if not that many people these days remember it as it was made 29-30 years ago and I dont believe it is being repeated lately, also it was not immensly popular and some may find it a bit primative, not me though as this sort of thing is my bag baby. To those people I say buy the DVD/Video and see for yourself, but remember to bring an open mind with you.

The programme is about 4 kids who are Homosuperiors the next stage of human evolution but they are more commonly known as 'Tomorrow People'. There powers include Telekinesis [moving things], Teleportation [moving themselves], and Telepathy [thinking]. The eldest boy John was the first to realise he had these powers, another boy called Kenny, a girl called Carol and the newest recruit Stephen. They also have a special secret base where they meet and a futuristic talking biological computer called TIM.

I have just got the first in the series on DVD The Slaves Of Jedikiah, and it bacically introduces us to The Tomorrow People, the series like most sci-fi's is basically about the good fight against the bad, I think it was quite revolutionary for the time to cast children in all the roles.

In this story Jedikiah needs them to help free his spaceship from earth's orbit where it has got stuck.

The series ran for 6 years from 1973-1979, included 8 series and 22 stories, all will be available on DVD and video soon and I believe all the audio cassettes are already released. The offical website is at www.tv.cream.org. The DVD also includes Full Episode
guides, Cast Profiles, The story of the slaves of jedikiah, Origins of The Tomorrow people, Picture Gallery and an Audio Trailer, unfortunately these special features are all text written apart from the Picture Gallery which are stills.

Looking back and seeing what we have now this programmes did not have amazing SFX only a small budget stretched to basic sets, which included that great white look of the time and genre [especially present in Peter Davison's time as DR Who]. However this does not detract from the enjoyment of it only add's a nieve simplisity to it. But then again the special effects and budget of Dr Who was not great but what true fan minds?
