Advantages: great fun
Disadvantages: lack of technical specs
i am perhaps something of a paradox. I have absolutly no interest in cars at all. I come from a family where cars are very much part of everyday life, and yet I simply do not consider the subject to be interesting at all. I have a car, but not through choice. I have a car because I need it to travel places. I am sure its not a good car, nothing if not average in most regards. Yet I am satisfied with it. Indeed I am positively happy with it.
I say this as something of a disclaimer. Any review of an automotive institution such as Top Gear deserves to have an honest opening. The paradox comes as I must confess that I absolutly love this program. I do not watch a great deal of television yet I consider this program to be a real must for my viewing. It drives my wife insane that I am so obsessed with this show.
Top gear has come under attack in recent years, with people claiming that it is no longer a die-hard car show so much as a chat show or some kind of warped reality show. To be honest I know what the mean and can only agree. There is much more time dedicated to inter personal relationships than there is to car facts and figures. The show features a great deal of car related tom-foolery, but this is not close enough to the mark to satisfy any kind of car enthusiast.
All of these complaints are grounded in truth, as far as I am concerned. But I do not see them as complaints. The show itself is more than a little lacking in technical information. But then if thats what you are looking for, then go somewhere else. Few can debate this programs watchability. It is addictive TV, even if your only motivation is to see how exceptionally badly Jeremy will do at the tasks they set.
This carshow only features cars as a backdrop to the relationships that you see on screen. The program is all about the three presenters, and few could argue against that as truth.
Cars are featured, but what is more present is the presenters passion for cars. This is a show where you can see on show the physical manifestation of a teenage boys fascination with cars.
The program gives an insight into the lives of what the presenters refer to as 'petrol heads' - people who are consumed by cars as a way of life.
Summary: i love this entertainment show but I dont like cars
