Advantages: good format
Disadvantages: too short
Top Gear is currently one of the most popular and most watched programmes shown on the BBC. It is presented by Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond and to a lesser extent the enigma that is The Stig, who is much better being an enigma.
It has everything one would want in a car TV show. Car reviews, humour, celebrity interviews and car challenges. It is the humour which sells the programme for me. The rapport between the presenters is often hilarious and sometimes below the belt. It is very blokey humour, which will please dads!
Each episode reviews many different cars. Although most of the reviews are of amazing sexy super cars which cost far more than most of us earn in a year, they also review cars that are a bit more affordable. This means that the show can attract a wider spectrum of viewers.
In the "reviewing" of they cars they usually put them through some weird and wonderful challenges. Some of these challenges have included putting the cars up against the army, jumbo jets, helicopters and also against each other. For die hard junkies, this is the most exciting part of the show and often will have you on the edge of your seat.
Although this seems like an over elaborate way to review a cars performance and to an extent a rather extravagant use of the TV licence fee by the BBC, it works extremely well, as it provides amazing and gripping entertainment, and keeps viewers coming back week after week.
Another highlight is the meaty music which accompanies the show. You always know when it is on when you hear that nagging theme tune! It might be quite a blokey programme, but the sex appeal of Clarkson and Hammond also pulls in females, so top marks for Top Gear!
Summary: good car fun
