Advantages: Great fun with a bit of real information thrown in here and there
Disadvantages: Some of the challenge can be a bit hard to believe these days
I have been a huge fan of Top Gear since it's relaunch in the current format.
It is a motoring show primarily, but it has more to offer than just car reviews. It's a bit Chat Show, a bit Comedy, a bit Documentary and very cleverly made to keep it fast paced, exciting and funny.
The bulk of the shows content seems to be based around a challenge each week. These challenges vary but generally have the guys having a set budget to buy/modify a vehicle and then complete a series of small challenges with them. For example a time-trial, or a race from one town/country to another.
There are way too many points to try to cover here, but one shoot they did was racing a Bugatti Veyron against a Eurofighter Typhoon. This shoot had some of the most impressive filming I have ever seen and was amazing to watch.
Some of the challenges are obvious from the start what is going to happen but are still sooo funny. As a caravanner, when the team had a challenge to go camping with a caravan, I was rolling on the floor laughing at their mishaps.
There is a downside though. I think these days they are trying too hard to match up to their best challenges and it results in some events and outcomes that are way to perfect, and I get the feeling they are staged. They may not be, but the last series or two give me that impression.
That said however, I still watch religiously and enjoy it immensely. I just don't take everything they say or do as gospel.
Summary: An amazing show with something for everyone
