Advantages: bums and cleavage for the old pervs, glitzy bands for the kids
Disadvantages: old format and never heard of presenters
From my earliest days of watching television, one program that has followed me as I have grown up is 'Top of the pops'.
Back then though (the 70's and 80's), it all seemed so exciting and real.
Unfortunatly these days something has changed a little for the worse :-
The presenters - Seems anyone can host the show if they can speak these days. Half of the time I have never even heard of whoever it might be, (and why is there always a crowd of uninterested people stood around the presenter like he is giving away gold?)
The bands - Sometimes quite decent bands frequent this show more than once, but I have noticed that if the same song stays in the charts for more than a week then the same performance is broadcast the following week and every week there after.(I'll not go into our licence fee and how it is spent on this op!)
And do they all perform live?
I'm not entirley satisfied afetr hearing such bands as 'Hearsay' and 'Atomic Kiten', the words and music went a bit too well together for my liking for a 'Live' performance.
Its perhaps not about performing live, but it would just show the real talent about these days, and not thrown together boy bands, girl bands and wannabe bands.
The time it is shown - Once upon a time it was always on on a Thursday evening, now its on on a Friday evening.....so what u might think? .. well the vast majority of people the show is aimed at are probably in the shower or just about to get in a taxi and go out drinking.
The camera angles havent changed much either, we still get the old perv of a camera man zooming in on cleavage and bottoms, once a novelty in my younger days, but now quite annoying !
Other choices of music shows on terrestrial television include such shows as the 'Pepsi Chart Show' and CDuk on a Saturday morning.
Both of these shows take the roughly the same format as ToTp,
but somehow I find them much more watchable.
As for Satellite television, then it completley blows ToTp out of the water.
Its a show that the Beeb are hanging on to, and why not, there are people still making it a one of thier regular viewings, but unfortunatley they lost me some time ago.
Its time the BBC ripped up the old format for the show and let MTV and other specialist Television stations get on with it or came up with something a bit more up to date and realistic.
