When Andrew told me about this series I was quite excited about watching because I thought it would be on a par with the film 'Twilight'. After watching the first in the series I realised how very wrong I was; it was totally, totally different in a lot of ways!
Here we have a series that is about vampires which have integrated into society and wildly accepted (by some) as part of everyday life. The Japanese have invented a drink that comes very close to human blood so that is what the 'vamps' live on. As with most series it follows an array of different characters including Bill who is a vampire, Sookie who isn't, Jason who is Sookies brother and Teyra who is Sookies best friend. Some of the characters in the series have special powers which become apparent as time goes on.
I find that this series is very much like Gavin and Stacey in that the main characters are very weak over all. I feel that Sookie is rather dull and although they try to make her out to be brave and courageous, she really doesn't stand out to be a great actress. Teyra who is Sookie's best friend I feel is one of the strongest characters in the story, she is not only funny and witty but she is slightly more convincing than everyone else which leads me to my next point.
The acting is rather weak throughout the whole thing. Now I can't work out whether I feel this way because they all have this very corny Texan accent that is so pronounced it is ridiculous or if the acting is out and out rubbish or if it's the script which again leads me to my next point!
The script is weird and off the wall but it is also very sexual. There are plenty of boobs on show although the men's parts never make an appearance! Surprise! Surprise! The scenes aren't subtle in any way shape or form and if someone is angry then this will be shoved in the viewers face by zooming the camera in on the actors face so that this emotion can't be missed. It almost reminds me of a very amateurish film.
Despite all of the above, I find the series very compelling and I actually quite like it. I just find the whole thing totally bizarre and laughable in some parts and I can't quite put my finger on why I keep on watching it especially now we are into the second series and the storyline has really gone down hill; like I said, it's compelling.
One thing I really love about this show is the language. If one of the characters is angry then they say the worst swear words you can imagine which in my opinion is great. There is nothing worse than watching a programme where someone gets annoyed and shouts out 'Oh damn'. In my life this isn't realistic. The characters really go for it and I find this quite refreshing to be honest!
If you have a slight interest in vampires, special powers or boobs then this might be one for you to try. I recommend that you give yourself two or three episodes before you decide whether you like it or not and don't bother with the second series because it's not so good!
Summary: An odd series that I can't stop watching!
