UFONewest Review: ... one Colonel Straker, was given free reign to build a moon base to detect the UFOS as well as a command centre in England. The command centre was rather groovily disguised as a working movie studio and its lots, with the actual command centre being below ground. Straker posed as the mogul who approved scripts for actual films to be made there (perhaps helping bankroll the operation in an indirect way), and who could access his REAL job as commander of SHADO ('Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organization' ) by way of his office turning into a huge lift that would drop down into the complex. The manned moon base served to house SID, ... more |

I was happily reading and rating one day on DooYoo, when I came across a review for a TV show I had never heard of. This was a program called UFO, and I was delighted to discover it was by Gerry Anderson. I made a mental note to check out the availability of the series on DVD, and thought no more about it until one afternoon, stiff with boredom, I retreated to the embrace of the idiot box, and began scrolling through its listed dross for a nugget of something even vaguely entertaining. What was this? ITV 4 was showing UFO? And it was the very first episode? Recalling the review I had read, I prepared myself a drink and a snack in the 15 minutes before the episode's ... Rediscovering programmes you watched as a kid can often be disappointing. You find that Doomwatch was ludicrous, Starsky and Hutch was trash (sorry about that karenuk!), and that Space 1999 was the most scientifically illiterate, and almost dialogue-less, drivel of all time. And yet it was Space 1999 that replaced UFO when it was cancelled after only 26 episodes. Gerry Anderson had built on the success and popularity of Thunderbirds (1965-66) with Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-68) and Joe 90 (1968-69) before coming a cropper with The Secret Service - his first attempt to mix puppetry with live action - which, ... U.F.O. stars Ed Bishop as Commander Straker, the commander of SHADO (the Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defense Organisation), which is located underneath the Harlington-Straker film studio. The show ran from 1970-1973, lasting a total of 26 episodes. Set in 1980 it follows SHADO’s attempts to thwart the attacks on Earth by an alien force which is trying to steal human organs in order to keep its race alive. Viewers were not shown the origin of the aliens, which helped the suspense value of the show, and indeed they didn’t even appear on screen very often. Special effects on the show were excellent, with some fantastic model effects work from Derek ... Read the complete review

Well someone had to be first, and it looks like its me. I always loved the show, from the first time when I saw it as a kid to the repeats whenever I get chance to see it. It is classic TV. The cast looked starnge, the effects looked trashy and the acting werent that great. Yet it all worked and was or should I say is a class act. If you want to see something that should have continued to this day. Then get to see it. ... Read the complete review
