... tortured and embittered soul with pathos and feeling. Having run the gamut of British and often risibly erstaz American whodunnit mystery copies, Henning Mankell's detective stories have created a character who in some ways makes Columbo appear to be the acme of sartorial elegance. Wallander isn't so much rumpled, as crushed, mashed and cubed and ready for the dustbin of life. Wallander works in a bleak monochrome wasteland on the coast of southern Sweden, a defeated, seemingly post-armageddon theme park that, in com...more

Premium Review Wallander: An excellent mystery series. (341 words)

Rating:

I have attempted to watch the original Swedish version of Wallander, but unfortunately either something is lost in sub titled translation, or the scene has moved on by the time I've skimmed through and assimilated the sub text. The English language version with Kenneth Branagh is, however, much more to my taste. I found his treatment of an essentially Scandinavian mindset refreshing and innovative. Branagh, not always my favourite actor due to his occasionally idiosyncratic approach to characterization, does full justice to the persona of Kurt Wallander I feel, and explores the depths of a tortured and embittered soul with pathos and feeling. Premium Review Swedish Crime's Wounded Hero (247 words)

Rating:

This beautifully filmed, sensitively acted BBC adaptation of the bestselling crime novels of Henning Mankell, breathes fresh, cool air into the familiar format of a world-weary cop in a violent, confusing world. Kenneth Branagh is masterful as Kurt Wallander - a bewildered, defeated 40-something policeman in the Swedish town of Ystad who has seen his peaceful beautiful town slowly morphing into a dark place of terror and violence over the years, and whose own personal life has slowly unravelled while his attention was elsewhere. Wallander has a distant and disappointing relationship with his elderly father (poignantly played by David Warner) who ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Based on Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander crime novels written in their native swedish, this BBC adaptation is not the first time the books have been filmed. They have already been adapted as a series of swedish language films though the presence of Kenneth Branaugh in this version has lent the drama extra credubility and much stronger critical acclaim. Shown in December of last year, the series ran for three feature length episodes and is due for a return to our screens shortly. Detective dramas are not normally to my taste on television because they are often repetive, too similar and predictable. Also they appear on terrestial T.V a hell of a lot (both BBC ...  Read the complete review
