Advantages: the voting system
Disadvantages: over-rated presenter
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
Ann Robinson hosts a quiz show with a difference: contestants play together to build up a bank of money before voting one member off the panel each round. The money adds up until the final man (or woman) left standing walks away with the rest of the cash. The difference is that Ann mocks, ridicules and tears apart the contestants from behind her iron poker face.
IS IT ANY GOOD:
The quiz show market was dying, and so new gimics were needed to draw in new fans. For 'The Weakest Link', that came in Ann's outright nastiness to contestants - a bizarre concept but one that worked well, for a few years at least.
At the start of the show, the questions are easy, which means anyone can play along at home (a nice touch), but as it gets further and further in, the questions get harder and harder, until only two are left.
The most interesting factor is the way that people vote each-other off. The really stupid ones vote off the worst players the whole way through, but occasionally people will team up to tactically vote off the best players, to leave them with a higher chance of winning. The faces on the clever ones when this happens are priceless - 'how could you do such a thing to me?' is written all over their boffiny little heads, and it's great to watch.
As a presenter, Robinson is overrated, and unable to power the show as she's supposed to, but the voting system makes up for her inabilities, and results in a good, entertaining quiz show.
IF YOU LIKED IT:
You may also like Eggheads, another team based quiz show, and even 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire', which in my opinion is much less entertaining.
Summary: not a bad show
